Purpleman A Go Nice Up The Area - a Purpleman Showcase
August 13, 2009 07:18PM

Yes people, here's another special one I'm quite enthousiastic about myself. How often have you seen (if ever!) a mix dedicated to the works of Purpleman? Well, here is one! After having mixes focusing on the works of deejays Nicodemus (2x), Toyan, Papa Tollo and Dillinger, this time it is Purpleman getting the bmc-treatment. Mix of close to 60 minutes, Purpleman tracks combined with some vocal-cuts on the riddims and a few dubs. Same style as always, no full tracks, added soundsamples, all mixed together to one hour of early 80s niceness. Being not too well-known, I hope I can introduce this fine deejay to some of you and for those knowing him, enjoy this showcase of mainly album-tracks.

Sources are given (number behind title combines with list below tracks).

Drop me a comment if you enjoyed the music and effort. Thanks.

Big up BMC, Purpleman is a wicked but seemingly forgotten artist. It was great to see lots of photos of him in Beth Lesser's dancehall book.

That was pretty cool BMC - never heard but one Purpleman sond before so thanks for the intro. Listening to the Delroy Wilson mix now to get me in the mood for the copy of Dub Plate Style waiting for me on the porch!

Thanks again star!

Cheers selektahjohnbrown, my pleasure, glad to hear you've enjoyed it! Am awaiting that Delroy set on Pressure Sounds too. Hope to get it within the next couple of days (ordered it directly from them and know its on its way).

Yes Fish, he certainly is a wicked artist. Ever since I got my hands on the 45 of Get Me Mad, I bought (when effordable) the records I found of his, resulting in the above set. The photo's in Beth's book are great indeed, of Purpleman and all others. Must have book for the dancehall fan I'd say. The three in the picture I've added I took from the albums 3, 6 and 11 in the source list above.

Cheers Nick, no, not familiar with that tune. In fact I only have one Purpleman single (Get Me Mad on a Hitbound 45), all other tracks I have on albums. Someone over at B&F also mentioned "daddy mix", apparantely on an Observer 12"? Got me really curious about that one, will keep it in mind.

BMC or others: can anyone speak to the early 80's scene when there were 3 albino djs all active at the same time (purpleman, yellowman, and king mellow yellow)? did one dj make it before the others? was this a product of soundsystem jousting? seems like an interesting time in the dance, and i'm just curious about the context and history. thanks.

A few months back I was thinking how nice it would be to check Purpleman's work. You read my mind. Cheers.

Wish there was some way to subscribe to your mixes, BMC, like I was able to on your old podcast. Having it magically arrive on the computer and being able to refer to the track list on the ipod was key.

Keep the obscure rub-a-dub coming!

Re: Purpleman A Go Nice Up The Area - a Purpleman Showcase

>purpleman, yellowman, and king mellow yellow

king yellowman was the originator, the others followed on the wake of his popularity. for a while there every dundus on the island was picking up a mic and trying to do a thing, largely based on their genetic structure.

there were others too although their names are escaping me at the moment.

yellowman was and remains the king of the albino djs, largely through his humble bearing and ability to ride just about any riddim and make it memorable, not to mention his endless ability to overcome struggles that would flatten most of us.

one love

Thanks all for the positivity! Great to see how much positive response this one has gotten! Nice one.

> king yellowman was the originator, the others followed on the wake of his popularity.

Yes, that's how I also thought of it as well. For me Purpleman has definitely tracks that can test Yellow though, but all in all, I love both.

I agree fully BMC Purple is the only albino dj that could ever test King Yellowman. JB agree same way.

One of my top ten faves is Yellowman & Purpleman - Showdown Vol. 5

Original riddim riders IMO. BMC, large up yourself again for this one.

Why does Purple mention yellowman so much. I heard yellowman's name on the mix more than purple. Where do I find that Assasin song "Give thanks"

For those that missed it back then:

Since it takes me more and more time to bring new mixes these days and I've had several requests for re-uploads of some of my older ones, I figured lets start with that. First one that was requested more than once is this mix I did 5 years ago (2009) and one I'm still very pleased with: Purpleman A Go Nice Up The Area! Purpleman recently joined Facebook and is doing good by the looks of it, find him there. I've slightly updated the mix on some transitions and effects volume (lowered) and for this occassion added two additional tracks that were not in the original 2009 edition since I got the Purpleman 45 in question after making the mix at the time: Level Vibes Pumping. So worth checking even if you already heard the 2009 edition. Updated track- and sourcelist as follows:

Hey BMC, thanks for putting that classic one back up - a real gem that got lost 2-3 moves ago.
Glad to finally rip a copy again. Any chance you can put the Delroy Wilson back up when you get around to it?

Thanks RV and papaken, much appreciated!

Yes RV, that Delroy has crossed my mind to re-up while I was working on the Purpleman and Toyan. Others that crossed my mind were the Papa Tollo and Lee Perry in Black Ark mixes. Will see if I can find the time for one or two more the coming weeks, starting with the Delroy. Cheers.
