monterey bay reggae fest

Does anyone know why 2003 show was cancelled and will 2004 return.Anyone with any info let me know
Re: monterey bay reggae fest
January 23, 2004 10:15AM
I was told by a reliable source that the festival in Monterey was cancelled because the promoter had failed to live up to his financial responsibilities, ie too many unpaid bills from the previous year.
But of course, the exact reasons may have been more complex then that.

As you may remember, there was a last minute effort to linkup with another promoter and have the show in Salinas, but that fell through.

Its a shame the festival could not continue in Monterey...that was a very enjoyable festival at a great venue.
Re: monterey bay reggae fest
January 27, 2004 11:48AM
I spoke with someone actually at the fairgrounds inquiring about the cancellation because I'm about a 4 year vet at Monterey's rest as well. I was told that they cancelled the show because they wanted to weed out some of the crowd. It was pretty rowdy the year before, and you could tell that one-love vibe was tarnished. I hear some fights broke out. But supposedly we are set for this year... Peace, love and God's blessings to you all... See you all in Monterey (hopefully)

i find that highly doubtful, but i suppose it sounds good on the press release. i didnt see any fights or anything the last year there though i heard there was some commotion at the gates once or twice. i think john rhythmwise was more on target. im not sure how anyone thinks cancelling/moving/rescheduling/recancelling it is going to "weed out some of the crowd" though obviously they succeeded in "weeding out" the entire crowd last year.

at any rate i wish them the best of luck getting it together again, i for one think its a great venue and a great show.

Yes, the venue is incredible. Those huge trees with the white bark, and all the grass. Just a great feel to the place. Kinda the same feel as the village stage @snwmf, only bigger. I don't remember any bad vibes worth mentioning, but there's always gonna be some. That's why we inna dis, seen.

i heard the same thing about unpaid bills, also, a lack of post fest clean- up. A friend had his wedding reception there last year. during the reservation phase of booking the hall, he asked why there was no fest in 2003. the above reason was given by the person in charge of such things.but I ain't one to gossip, so you ain't heard it from me... oh yeah, I'm proud to say I have attended every Monterey fest since the first in 95, never seen any bad vibes. Re: monterey bay reggae fest

Ive never seen any bad vibes or incidents, but there has been a few.

Some guy pulled a gun backstage a few years ago which can be
considered "bad vibes".

However, any event with thousands in attendance will always have
a few incidents and problems, but I've always thought this festival
was relatively free of such things.

There were a few fights last time I was there - during Ras Michaels set as a matter of fact. And yes - it WAS the gang-bangin' youth. It's really a shame that they can't pick up on the vibes... they moved the SNWMF for the same reasons (or so I heard) - too many "troubled" youth from Marysville wandering into the campgrounds and starting incidents.

just to let y'all know... the monterey bay reggae fest is going to happen this year in '04. I heard that they did not get the fairground permits in time last year, so the show was cancelled as a result. be on the look out for any mentions of the event, and they should have a website up by july... hopefully.

2003 was canceled because of to much over head costs by the old promoters. now they got new people for the 2004 labor day weekend show. ALPHA BLONDY,I VIBES WILL BE THERE!!!!!!!
Re: monterey bay reggae fest
July 29, 2004 09:58PM
THE REASON THE SHOW WAS CANCELLED WAS THE PROMOTERS DID A BAD JOB. THEY SHOULD LOOK AT OTHER SUCCESSFUL FESTIVALS LIKE SIERRA AND THE RIVER. I HAVE BEEN TO EVERY MONTEREY SHOW AND THEY ALL WERE IRIE,ESPECIALLY 2002.

No they don't - same people doing the same thing this year.... they shouldn't be commended for their efforts - they are disorganized, dishonest, disrespectful, and shady characters burning bridgesa all along the way.

Anyone out there know of this band called Inner Visions? I hear they are coming to Monterey this year. My friend tells me I should not miss them. She says it's another great phenomenon from the Virgin Islands. If they rock like Midnite I don't want to miss them for the world. It's time for some fresh vibes again! Anyone who've seen them please comment! I do think my friend is a little crazy but she knows her reggae music. She's never been wrong before!

Re: monterey bay reggae fest
August 19, 2004 05:40PM
yes joe,
I know inner visions. they are from the small virgin island, st john.
they rarely make it out to the west coast and usually tour only in the islands and east coast., I saw them last summer at the grass valley world music festival. they were great! Its a family band like midnite with the bassist and lead being brothers and the drums and keys their sons. They are roots music at its best.
Another roots band from st croix will be Bambu station at the monterey fest this year too. It will be their first west coast debut! see you there, tell a friend...

i*recieved 1 of these flyers & looks to be great line-up forsure! [www.mbayreggaefest.net]
the only ting i* must mention is it is noted under dj's listed that selecta7 will play im guessing this is the guy from santa cruz who does show on KZSC tuesday morningz ,who says he also worx plugging vp records. well i'll tell the massive just like i* told him to set it straight when him call i*house by phone personley for an obvious reason. i*said "Selecta7souN system(R.A.W.#1792*)" has used dis name over five going on 6 years now &has manifested it's own liberated destiney by now so no plans to change the name in dis current time, in longer phrases. im guessing when he saw the ad in the reggae festival guide next to photo match up answers he didnt realize iNi till then & also seemed he dropped a website last year for his crew also not knowing i*personley have been useing web communication for many years. just do a search & u will find so anyways look for tha #7selecta who plays concious heavyweight dub for all the raggmuffin mazzive! -RASpects+

the m b reggae fest is being advertised on local Clear Channel Radio slave station 102.5 KDON and being called "the KDON reggae fest". What's up with that? they got a catchy commercial that airs daily. the only thing they know about reggae is Sean Paul and Bennie Man featuring Janet Jackson. (I mean no disrespect to those artists , just making a point about commercialism). I'm still gonna go, but, that kinda lets you know what the main purpose of this fest is. That's not my reason for going, I just love reggae music and it's a cool venue. your thoughts will be appreciated, IRIE

go john go! i* feel ya project but clear channel on other hand is very bad for REGGAE music all the way around the set. i've heard several complaints about dis wicked group in other states aswell as other commercial groups such as NIPP throwing a lawsuit for what they are doing.
last year clear channel put up a steel pulse & ziggy marley show here in tempe,AZ.. this had to go down in history as the worst ever reggae shows in central Arizona history. besides the fact dem control all local radio & bloodclot venues so other promoters cant even pass a flyer to their friend for any other show dat iz being produced with out getting hassled by wanna B police security.
they also had the real police set up out back as the meatheads would push victims out the backdoor for any little voilation,ya kno*. dem had so many people back up for the BIG bust dey had to start telling people to lean against wall untill dey could talk to dem ,giving dem like a running chance type of lure. i*witnessed dis whole event as i* was personaly attacked by a group of about 6 thugs in red shirts & esscorted of property for simply handing out a postcard size paper that listed iNi website on both occasions!with only explaination dat it waz against clear channel rules to handout anyting even to friends dem seh* while a giddy girl was walking around with a boxx of promo disks for a certain record company iNi will not mention rite now because its besides original point.
so while the FCC & clear channel buddy up &rip iNi off rite over our noses, i* guezz nobody really cares. i* say dis cause it's true in dis event anywayz. i* bet half of these groups playing dont care either ya kno*, its sort of a shame ya kno when clear channel can do dis to iNi sooo easy.
so if dis #7selecta waz gonna play be sure it would get mention ya kno* iNi tru rebel in walkz of worx like Jah Shaka, ya kno*. check out what sort of message he sent to promoters @the Essential Festival 2001*. as research shows Jah Shaka let dem kno rite on stage straight up! iNi need more kings like shaka around to let these bogus promoters kno the foundation iz true! -RASpects+

Re: monterey bay reggae fest

C.R.E.A.M true. But KDON doesn't know jack about reggae. We all know what the bottom line is to the promoters. To me it just seems like a big contradiction that a station that does not have any reggae (other than Sean Paul, if you can call him "reggae"winking smiley in regular rotation would be putting on reggae show.

Re: monterey bay reggae fest

where is the money going too. KDON does not just gonna put up sponcership on a free love attitude. what sort of vending r'iNi gonna c'here. or is just another chance for a beer companys to get a hustle mash on aswell. sumting i*would expect from any sort of mid-west reggae festival but i* tink cali really set a u.s. reggae festival example in past & now be on a water down from this yearz trials alone from other events already held. SNWMF still #1 so no worries here but iNi must live it up in dis crucial time. -RASpects+

put aside the undercover police boy trying to stop a plant smoking, the promoters who are trying to charge us to cover costs of bands and venue, radio stations who are "commercial" putting their name on the flyer all of this does not matter when a band like bambu station come out and sing"fire" cause the music still and always has pushed through little imbalances we encounter along the road....massive get strong, see past all the things talking about here and listen closesly to the music and the message, maybe not beenie man but surely, yami bolo, sister carol, bambu station, iba, inner visions, ras michael, prezident brown and more....this lineup is better than sierra nevada (missing midnite, dezarie and ikahba) its just funny to hear or read all of you complaining about the radio or promoter vibe, I ask you What's New? I#I miss being part of these years promotion, but also miss hearing or seeng any tribute to my partner the fantastic Mr. ROBERT BROWN, the FOUNDING FATHER OF MONTEREY BAY REGGAFEST, who passed on to join the Higher Crew to HIM. Robert Brown died in 1995 shortly after the very First .. MBAYREGGAEFEST.... So this is my Tribute To him, who gave his life, and died becouse of all the stress that it took to ontake the firs event. Iand I a humble souljah to HIM. still miss the original blueprints for this festival, and was raised to Hold Up Rasta Truth, Hold it HI ! Ras Midas was our founding Preformer Who is an Nyabingi Elder,His Voice Is Love... Jah Love , would like to work with him again and Lion of Judah Our Home band who was working the Land .. Bringing their rhytns to contribute to the local Juneteenth Celebration, I and I was allways there the faciliator, Monterey was a Vision of many hard working Rastas, We know who We are... The reason I am writing this now becouse noone else would talk about Him, Robert Brow, like He never Happened. It is not right we should give a tribute and hold onto the LOVE even more so Just like Bob Marley is Still here with us!!I asked the Promoter of these latent Festivals, Andre Smith, How come nowhere did I see a tribute to Robert Brown not anywhere in the Gallery is He commemorated, and His reply was Who Is ROBERT BROWN???? Very dubious reply and I see they do the same in Africa to all our founding Queens faces they try to Oblitarate the Truth, Yet this TIME IS THE TIME WHEN ALL THE TRUTH MUST BE REVEILED and not to be kept secret. Bless all people, not sure what Jahmeek say. But I work for Bambu station as I did Midnite three years ago before you ever heard of them. Bambu is just a nother band from the VI that mashes it up. No bandwagon jumping, just continuing the roots tradition. I know midnite vaughn ron phil all them, drove for them two tours in a row been to croix last year, have met and worked/work for Army, Batch, Star Lion Family, Bambu Station, King Lion, Iba, Ras Attitude and more....No Vibes on this little Forum here, just spreading more concious lyrics, original styles no copy cat reggae....Jah love you jah meek stay up

yes* e> your in like flint. i* have been listioning to bambu station for a couple yearz now because i*dren passed i* a copy b4 it was @ an international distributing level. also note other great groups u hav mentioned but u did seem to be boasting monterey bay reggae festival because bambu station waz/is playing & would not make a difference who is playing when it showed a basterd looking ticket wide & clear from for front. not really sure if u live on west coast either but dar does seem to b a host of st.croix welcomers bringing the great vibes from the rising island while many other places packed with an overdrive of sweet reggae music including dub r'sort of ignored by many of festivals & promoters ect.. so press on, be strong. -RASpects+
