My friend for life Jamal Andrews of Mendocino County's Highgrade All-Stars was shot @ around 10 pm @ the front gate to his home in Redwood Valley Last night, Tues. Jan. 24th by his neighbor and Racist piece of sh*t Billy Norbury. Jamal noticed him at his gate and went out to confront the man, an argument ensued and the man shot Jamal in the back when he turned to run. He leaves behind a newborn child, Kaiden, not quite 1 year old yet and a loving Girlfriend of many years Miranda, Mother Lucy, Brother Josh and Father David. From what I understand Billy Norbury had made racial slurs about Jamal-he had been a habitual drug user and in and out of Jail many times.
Jamal had a white mother and a black father, growing up in Laytonville, he dealt with small town b.s. always. Never did i think that His life would end by a Bullet @ his front gate, partly due to the color of his skin. Racism, as much as we would like to think it does not exist in our community, is sometimes right around the corner-at the end of the street. Although it might not always be in our face, tolerance for this disgusting lifestyle should not be tolerated and stomped out before the flames of Hate are fanned into a out of control fire. Racism does not see color-white, yellow, black, red-it no matter-Hate see's no color-only tragedy-fan the flames and a man with a gun filled with pointless rage might knock @ your door.

Our Community is hurt and crushed by this senseless killing. I am a wreck. Im not a Detective, or a reporter, just a local and a friend that calls em like i see's em. My community will miss Jamal forever. He was a serious lyricist with books of ryhmes and always strived to be the best @ what he did. Maybe after reading this there is someone out there that will reconsider saying something filled with shallow Hate. Its just been a long, sad day. There is plenty of news coverage if anybody wants to know more info about the murder-just look up any local paper website. Jamal was a great person, a good father, a good friend and a wicked rhyme writer. HIGHGRADE FOREVER-RIP JAMAL ANDREWS AND MOESE ANGEL

I don't doubt that there was a racialist element to this tragedy, but more than that the killer is mentally ill.

Unfortunately, this is almost exactly the same situation as the crazy guy who killed two people in Jackson Forest last summer. It will emerge as this case goes forward that Jamal's killer had profound psychiatric problems. And, as we know, Community Mental Health is non-existent in Mendocino County after decades of budget slashing on the state and local level. After the horrible events of last summer the County Board was forced to accept the concept of community responsibility for the mentally ill who are dangers to the community. But there is no money, no mechanism, no enforcement.

With all the meth and alcohol induced madness in Northern California these tragedies will continue until we muster the will to do something with these people besides ignore them until they hurt somebody.

Billy Norbury had a ongoing drug problem and was "not right" in the head. Mentally ill obviously. I heard the rest of the story today and the man was definitely sick.....its sad. Pointless. He was recently in jail.....I wish he would have stayed there. Jealousy is sickening.
Luckily, I still see nothing but love and promise in his sons eyes.

Mendocino authorities: No motive yet in shooting death of reggae musician
By GLENDA ANDERSON
THE PRESS DEMOCRAT
Published: Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 4:04 p.m.

The man suspected of killing Mendocino County reggae musician Jamal Andrews had a history of aberrant behavior, according to Mendocino County court records.

“He is mentally ill and extremely unstable,” Billy Norbury's estranged wife, Brittany, wrote in a May, 2011 letter to the court explaining why she wanted custody of their three children and wanted her husband limited to supervised visits.

Norbury, 33, is in Mendocino County jail in connection with the shooting death of Andrews, 30, Tuesday night outside the victim's home. It was the third time Norbury had made a late-night visit on an all-terrain vehicle to the home Andrews shared with his long-time girlfriend, Miranda Mills, and their 8-month-old son, Kaiden.

Mills, her voice breaking with emotion, said Thursday she was outside watching the men talk when Norbury fired a rifle. An autopsy determined Andrews was shot in the head and shoulder.

“Jamal passed away in our front yard while I was holding him,” she said.

Mills said they had not met Norbury before he showed up inexplicably at their house about three months ago and she does not know what prompted his actions.

“I wish he would tell us why,” she said.

Mendocino County Sheriff's Capt. Kurt Smallcomb said Thursday that a motive for the killing has not been determined.

Norbury's wife said in court affidavits that he is irrational and suffers from paranoia. He thought people were following him and listening to his conversations through the television, phone and car radio.

She wrote that he threw a cell phone in the creek because he thought it was bugged, spent time under the house checking for bugging devices and refused to wear a shirt she'd washed and ironed for him to wear to a birthday party because he thought she was in on a conspiracy to track him. Their eldest daughter, then 7, told a counselor she had to stop her father from choking her mother.

Norbury also was addicted to alcohol and was prohibited from driving because of three arrests for driving under the influence, according to his wife.

He was arrested two weeks ago on a public intoxication charge, according to jail records.

Norbury's family was critical of his wife in court documents, calling her untruthful. They defended him, saying he was a good father. His parents did not return phone calls seeking comment.

Norbury and Andrews lived about a quarter of a mile apart in Redwood Valley. Andrews kept the gate to his property shut, so Norbury parked outside and walked into the yard the first two visits. On Tuesday, he was on the far side of the gate when the fatal shots were fired, Smallcomb said.

Mills said that she had thought that whatever Norbury's problem was, it had solved. On his second visit to their home he had called it a misunderstanding and the two men shook hands, she said.

“Everything was supposed to be fine,” she said. That's now far from the case.

“It's going to be sad to see his son grow up without him. He was an amazing, amazing father,” Mills said.

Sheriff's detectives are requesting that anyone with information regarding the case call them at 707-467-9159. Callers may remain anonymous.

Brutal, I caught this story in the news down here in the Bay Area, and thought.. "Brutal, No where is safe these days..." now while reading this I realized just how small the world really is, I'm only one degree away from knowing this man personally and have been touched by his works directly.

My heart goes out to you who knew him and to his son.
Truly,

Stay Blessed.

Jamal Rasaan Andrews, 30, of Redwood Valley, died Tuesday January 24th, when he was taken from the world in a senseless and violent act. Jamal was born to David and Lucy Andrews on October 12, 1981, in Willits, CA. He grew up in the mountains of Laytonville, a happy and adventurous child. In school, he enjoyed sports such as soccer, basketball, and baseball. As an adult, his passion for life included many activities such as traveling, wakeboarding, snowboarding, cooking, watching sports, and other activities in which he could share in the company of others. Jamal had a love of music and performed in three different groups with lifelong friends. He found the love of his life, Miranda, and they made their home in Redwood Valley. Their son was born in 2011. A devoted father, Jamal was transformed by fatherhood. Jamal is survived by his fianc‚e Miranda Mills, their son Kaiden Andrews, parents David and Lucy Andrews, brother Josh Andrews, sister-in-law Cristena Andrews, and nieces Jaden, Layla, and Aryah. He is also survived by many extended family members, numerous friends, and countless people whom he touched in his life. Jamal was a kind, considerate, generous, loving, positive, free-spirited, and beautiful person. This loss is not only to his community, but also to the world. A light shone in Jamal that we now feel has been extinguished. We must remember that his light was so bright that each of us who was touched by him carries a trace of it within us. The family would like to thank everyone for the love and generosity received in the outpouring of phone calls, emails, and visits. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Kaiden's trust fund at Bank of America account# 01284-70514. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 11 at Harwood Hall in Laytonville. Potluck please. In Jamal's words, "you never know what you got 'til what you got's gone. You ain't physically here, but through us you live on." Arrangements are under the direction of the Eversole Mortuary.

Clearly a hate crime. The authorities say they have no motive. I'm gonna follow this one through the courts.

tune in to [theava.com] which is the boonville newspaper and covers the Ukiah courthouse every week with a fairly extensive report. I don't imagine this will go to trial anytime soon but all the prelim stuff will possibly indicate where this case is going.

This is feb. 2nd 2013 now, and I just registered here after reading of Jamal's murder as I roamed the net one more time, hoping to find a lead to my oldtime friend Lucy. This sounds so unreal and ugly, the most terrible news I could possibly happen into !! Last time I saw Jamal and Josh they were such sunny little boys... I left the US years ago and as time went by I lost track of many friends, before internet brought back some hope. Could PLEASE anyone send me a street or e-mail address for Lucy ? Many grateful thanks for any help. Please reply to this address : mariebenton7@gmail.com.
