I found myself rooting for him yesterday even against the Americans so in my mind that makes him iconic. He has a charisma about him and he is just a great athlete. I love USA and will always root for our athletes but really enjoy watching Bolt. I am a big soccer fan and love Manchester United and Bolt is a big Man Utd fan and said when he retires he will try out for them. I am curious to see how that works out.

That dude is a freak of nature! He blows the top competition away every time, not even close! I think he is the fastest man EVER, and we probably won't see anyone faster in our lifetimes, although you never know...

@Rossta- c'mon now, just because someone is a top athlete in one sport doesn't mean they can just automatically switch to another and play at the top levels. Just look at MJ and his flirtation with MLB!

I understand Reggabe but i am still curious to see what turns out with it? Will they give him a tryout and how good is he really at soccer? I dont doubt anybody till they try. I doubt Man Utd would even give him a tryout but you never know. Cant teach speed.

Ras James...I have found myself almost becoming GI Joe patriotic towards some of the commentary I hear coming out of the Jamaican Track and Field fan base. They remind me of "Ducks fans" from up here in Oregon....this is the thing. I hear constant references to how the US cheated its way to being a track and field power and JA had their medals taken yada yada yada....a couple of factoids. The greatest Olympian that currently living is King Carl Lewis. He can't sing a lick but he did everything Usain has done AND he won 3 medals in the Long Jump as well. The ONLY mark on his record was...hmmmm let me think. When he was robbed of his Olympic glory and chance to stand on the medal stand by Canadian (in citizenship only) Ben Johnson...who just happens to be a Jamaican...so the MOST notorious cheater in the history of Track and Field is a Jamaican. Remind people of this so they can slow keep perspective. Beyond that...great you can sprint...how has swimming gone for you? How about diving? Gymnastics? Any race over half a lap? How bout those field events? AFTER all of this I will say....BIG UP to the Jamaican Track and Field National Team for Shining bright on the world stage. Their fans who say things like "Since his name is Gay you know we have to beat him" and @#$%& like that, you are the reason Jamaicans can't buss even further on the world stage you hold your athletes back from world wide investment. There is a reason their is only 2 all weather tracks in Jamaica and I have 10 within 5 miles of my house. Think of what Jamaican Track and Field would be like with WORLD WIDE investment?

Final thought....come get some in the 4X100 we will be ready

Bad Example...Carl Lewis Was A Doper...

Carl Lewis Admidts Doping In 1988
Lewis: 'Who cares I failed drug test?'

Duncan Mackay
The Guardian, Wednesday 23 April 2003 20.51 EDT

Carl Lewis has broken his silence on allegations that he was the beneficiary of a drugs cover-up, admitting he had tested positive for banned substances but claiming he was just one of "hundreds" of American athletes who were allowed to escape bans.

"There were hundreds of people getting off," he said. "Everyone was treated the same."

Lewis has now acknowledged that he failed three tests during the 1988 US Olympic trials, which under international rules at the time should have prevented him from competing in the Seoul games two months later.

The admission is a further embarrassment for the United States Olympic Committee, which had initially denied claims that 114 positive tests between 1988 and 2000 were covered up. It will add weight to calls by leading anti-doping officials and top athletes for an independent inquiry into the US's record on drug issues.....

Yeah now way will he make Man Utd's roster but it does bring a lot of fun and will most certainly follow the situation and look forward to seeing what kind of skills Bolt has. I played college soccer at UCLA about 10 years ago and my dream was always to play for Man Utd so i am a bit jealous of Bolt. LOL but i didnt run a 9.6 100m either though.

Bolt is big, but i think Walter is probably right - if it isn't Kobe, this guy is probably the most iconic among current athletes:

You might not know who he is, but Lionel Messi is the best and most popular player in the world's most popular sport...

Not a true or fair statement, pretty comical that anyone thinks that really. So everyone in every sport is doping?
Re: BOLT Most Iconic Athlete In The World?

I love JA...I love Usain, Shelly Ann and the Beast...but when it comes to athletics there is no comparison between the Island Nation of Jamaica and the United States. Jim Thorpe, Jesse Owens, Michael Jordan, Mr. Muhammad Ali, Jack Dempsey, Mike Phelps we breed people who are the best in their sport. Even sports we suck at we roll JA like is was JV. Go check the medal count for this year alone. Forget about other sports. Go check the medal count in Track and Field. JA thinks they are bad in Track and Field, lets have a dual meet. Does the Jamaican team even contain a human that can run more then 2 laps?

I know nothing of the Gaurdian but I would be SHOCKED, if Carl Lewis admitted to using steroids.

PS...why is the JA paper do they take black athletes and make them white in the cartoons? That looks like Kartel and Red Rat with Kelly Ripa.
Re: BOLT Most Iconic Athlete In The World?

If Messi can win a world cup with Argentina he will go down as the greatest futbol player that has ever played the game. He will for sure pass Pele if Argentina can win a world cup. He is so dominant at club level for Barcelona it is ridiculous. Another guy who is legit and such a great player but in the shadow of Messi is Cristiano Ronaldo former Manchester United star and now current Real Madrid star. The guy is unreal and I personally prefer him over Messi but he did play for my beloved Man Utd so i am biased. But those two without a doubt are up there as the most iconic athletes in the world. The one thing Ronaldo has over messi is that he also is a model for every single underwear company out there and he dates a women who has been on the cover of victoria secret and sports illustrated swim suit edition. Ronaldo was sold to madrid for 90 million pounds making him the most expensive player ever.

Last years stats,

Messi- 59 appearences 70 goals and 26 assists
Ronaldo 54 appearences 64 goals and 15 assists

Those numbers are insane! Top goal scorers score around 30 goals a year what these two are doing is just silly
Re: BOLT Most Iconic Athlete In The World?
August 08, 2012 07:31PM
That's cool he was offered a tryout at Man U, like you said it will be interesting to see how that works out!

And I would say that Ronaldo is a bit more iconic than Messi, but that is coming from someone living in the Northern Hemisphere. But Messi will never touch Pele in terms of making an impact on the world, I don't know how anyone could say that. Even if he does win a world cup, doesn't Pele have 2 or 3?

C'mon ninja, it is unfair to comapre medal counts between US and Jamaica. They are a small island, we are a large country. They are a poor country with limited resources, we are one of the richest in the world with endless resources. If you compared medal counts using a per capita basis and per capita income basis, I bet it would be failrly close.

Carl Lewis was the greatest Olymian athlete I have seen in my lifetime, but Bolt is the fastest (he holds the world records!). I never heard that Lewis admitted to doping, that would be a shame, but I'm pretty sure Bolt is not using enhacing drugs.

Looking forward to the 200m final, hopefully Bolt breaks some more records, he's that exciting. And the 4x100 should be excellent! (when is that?)
Re: BOLT Most Iconic Athlete In The World?
August 08, 2012 08:20PM
my point was to demonstrate the "scale of things". I look all around the net and all I see is fans of the JA team talking shi+ about the US as if we are the only one's they are competing against. I have seen people saying "From you name Gay, you know JA haffi beat you" with a picture of Tyson Gay to people saying that the US only won medals over the past century due to drug use. My point is this...JA has nice sprinters. That is great..but that is all. As far as Track and Field is concerned you could take the state of Oregon alone and we would beat JA in a dual track field meet. DESTROY them. They are specialists. Mike Phelpys got more medals then the whole JA team will go home with this year. Don't poke the big dog, cause he likes his sleep.
Re: BOLT Most Iconic Athlete In The World?

Reggaebe Pele had 3 world cup titles to his name. 1958, 1962 and 1970. That Brazilian team though was so stacked it is ridiculous. Pele is credited with 3 world cups but only played in two. 58 and 70. Brazil won the 1962 world cup without him. Argentina is not even close to the talent pool that Brazil had in the late 50s thru the early 70s. Plus what Messi has done for his club team Barcelona blows anything Pele ever did at club level.Messi plays for one of the biggest clubs in Europe and Pele never played at that high of a level for club team. He stayed in Brazil his whole career where he was comfortable. Then when he did leave he came to play here in the States. Not the highest level of soccer.

I probably shouldnt even compare them because they played in such different generations. Pele is the King of soccer and Messi is the current King, I guess it would be like saying Midnite will one day be bigger then Bob Marley. I just personally think that Messi is the greatest ever with Maradona 2nd Cristiano Ronaldo 3rd and Pele 4th. Zinadine Zidane slides into the 5th best player ever in my book. This is awesome i love talking soccer and reggae!! Their is nothing i am more passionate about then soccer and reggae as my girlfriend is always reminding me.
Re: BOLT Most Iconic Athlete In The World?

beyond that Lionel Messi could walk around Portland and most people would have no idea who he was....I see this personally when Man U comes to the Nike campus and has their open training session. Wayne Rooney walks around and no one has any idea he is a professional athlete. I think people would think Messi must be a big guy for as much game as he has....I still remember about 8 years ago Ronaldhino won FIFA player of the year and he says that he isnt the best player on his team...he said Messi was the best...even at that stage. I think he was being humble, but still it speaks volumes.

Well, with Oregon having about 50% more people than Jamaica, with Oregon spending far more money than Jamaica on training athletes and with Oregon having far more people with sufficient assets to trod their children off to train etc., it's no wonder that they would win a track meet. But that doesn't change Jamaica's propensity for producing excellent sprinters just like how Ethiopia and Kenya produce excellent marathon runners....

Re: BOLT Most Iconic Athlete In The World?

I am talking about the State of Oregon and the human beings who come from here. The STATE of Oregon spends about 10 beans developing track and field athletes.

If you check back you will also see that my commentary stems from seeing Jamaicans talking shi+ about the US like they are running things when in reality they get two races and before Bolt they got ZERO races. Just imagine if the US started dissing JA because we have SNWMF and Best of the Best in Miami... We start dissing JA telling them their fest suck and our fests are the best in the world etc. Wouldn't fly my friend....

USA Track and Field is the best on the planet. This is actual factual. I am happy for the Jamaican Sprinters...they are the reason I started this thread but some perspective is required here.
Re: BOLT Most Iconic Athlete In The World?
August 09, 2012 04:55PM
PS...JA has 2.8 million people...Oregon about 3.4....also, we have about 15-20 actual sports in Oregon that draw our athletes not just 3 or 4 like in JA.

Plus it helps to have a little luck as well...obvious hand ball by the USA in the box missed by the ref. Great game though, lots of drama and excitement, like many of the women's games in the knockout rounds.

And, the Caribbean is really coming along in track and field now, not only Jamaica but Grenada(Gold in 400m), Dominican Republic, Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago.
Re: BOLT Most Iconic Athlete In The World?

don't forget the Bahamanian.....I think the kid who got second in the 400M from the Dominican Republic is only 18...I got a prediction for you....in 4 years in Rio the showdown is Bolt vs. Kirani James for the 400M gold. I think Bolt will try and double in the 200 and 400M similar to Michael Johnson...to me still the greatest double of all time. I think Bolt can do it. He will be like 30 when it comes around and he needs a new goal.

He is an alien amongst men...watch out though in Rio for Ryan Bailey. Finished 5th this year...FROM..Salem, Oregon.

I always hear how great Messi is, but I have never seen him come through in person. Every time Argentina is in a big game, he seems to dissapear, or at least doesn't get a goal. But I don't watch Premier League futbol (or whatever league he plays in), as I don't have cable, so maybe that is where he shines. International matches are the ones that get me the most excited anyway, where players are playing for national pride, country against country. World Cup is pretty much my favorite sporting event in the world. I was in Germany in 2006 and plan on going to Brazil in 2014!

You sound pretty knowledgable about soccer Rossta, but I can't believe you list Pele as the 4th greatest ever!? Have you seen clips of some of his bicycle kick goals? who does that nowadays? To me you have to win titles to be one of the greatest, which is why I put Pele at least above Ronaldo. But I hear ya about Brazil being a stacked team.

And yes, I do think Usain Bolt is maybe the most iconic athlete currently....
