Marley Question
February 05, 2013 04:00PM
Tomorrow I am giving my annual Bob Marley lecture in my history classes, mostly to dispel the stereotypes many of my students have, and was wondering- how many Marley songs did he sing about herb? I can only think of a few.

Thanks in advanced,
Jeff

Despite the title, I don't think African Herbsman is about herb at all.

Literally it probably doesn't, but I had always thought it was an allusion to it.

N.Roots, didn't think of that song, thanks.

I can't totally remember the story but I think I read that African Herbsman was a real person who was in the military who scored the best herb.

African Herbsman was written by Ritchie Havens but I wasn't able to find the story in stacks of the Reggae Beat magazine. I will keep looking.

Pg 140 of John Masouri's excellent book on Familyman "wailing blues"
Barrett & the Wailers says it was a soldier who smoked
Good herb from Angola who would drop by and roll a spliff
But no one could remember his name. I know I read more
Somewhere but can't remember where else

"Natural Mystic"?
Re: Marley Question

I was told that Three Little Birds was symbolic of the Trinity and I always interpreted Natural Mystic as having more to do with revelations and such than herb.

Could be wrong of course.

Peace

Alot of people want BOB to be all about the herb, but then again the herb is one of those things that has a tendency to creep into everything physically and figuratively.

The original is quite different

Um - meant to "reply to" DJ Big Jim's Richie Haven mention!

No disrespect but I had to give my two cents.
I'm a teacher of elementary students and have
Been honoring Bob for the last 7 years in my classroom.
Herb has nothing to do with why we honor Bob. We
Should be speaking about how he fought injustice,
Inequality, poverty, etc with word sound and power,
Putting reggae and Rastafarianism on a global
Scale. If we view bob as just someone who burned
Herb how can you blame kids for doing any different?

That's exactly the point of my annual lecture- to dispel the Bob=pot stereotype my students generally have. I was asking how many songs he wrote about herb because out of the hundreds he wrote only a few have to do with herb.

Peace

@ Dubguy,

Thanks for sharing that, I'd not heard that and your right it is different. Trying to chase the cartoony image of an Indian Fakir, piping a "Rope Snake" out a basket

do you think Richie Havens was making a camoflagued reference to Manila Hemp Rope?
