This is a nice festival. I guess Angels Camp police changed their minds about revenue and festie-goers.Last year was really fun and the music was surprisingly good! Lots of talent. I bet this is going to be a popular festival if the sheriff's leave it alone. The community seemed very supportive and friendly.Check it out.

Other acts on the lineup look solid too:

Anuhea

Natural Vibrations
Mystic Roots
Clear Conscience
The Expanders

plus some killer sounds....should be fun

Angels Camp! I'm going to check this out! The last time I saw Capelton was when the SNWMF was still there. I love Angels Camp! I have a timeshare there and can walk to the show. I wouldn't mind if the SNWMF relocated back there.

SNWMF is prob. going to stay in boonville. Being evicted 7 years ago can leave a bad taste in your mouth for a long time.
Re: Reggae in the Hills 2013
May 15, 2013 04:54PM
Just to be clear, SNWMF was not 'evicted' from Angel's Camp. They merely decided not to return given the hostility and animosity displayed by the Sheriff in charge there at the time. The funny thing was that, all the local merchants I talked to were very supportive of having the festival there and were disappointed when the festival moved on to greener pastures.... Apparently, so has Calaveras County as there's a new sheriff in town these dayz....

I remember hearing that the Merchants gave mad support. From Angels Camp, to Murphy's, to Arnold, and down to Sonora. I see that Reggae in the Hills is jumping off with a strong line up. So if the World Music Fest does not return, hopefully the Hills will keep it solid. Even if Midnite and VI crew become regulars there as they were at Frog Town early in the last decade. (2000s)

So, steel pulse did not kill it last night. They came on a half hour late, only played for 50 minutes, did not finish a set, and did not encore. Suck f.ing garbage. Loosing mad respect. I hope Capleton and ky-many redeem this festival tonight.

Westafari.. Don't know what show u were watching but that the first time I seen Steel pulse with a horn player .. I seen them so many times but no with a horn player .. They were late but they still killed it with the Saxophone player .. Ever seen i started watching they ever had a horn before that was about 15 years ago They wanted to perform longer but they didn't let .. They cut them off .. Main keyword player even said ..
Re: Reggae in the Hills 2013
June 09, 2013 09:21PM
They were a half hour late to start. Sidney was setting up his keyboard 15 min. before start time. Then they waited another 45 back stage. It was weird why they didn't come on on time.
Re: Reggae in the Hills 2013
June 10, 2013 02:12PM
Great festival over all. Very family friendly, skate park in the dance hall area was pretty cool, really liked how there was no over lapping time slots or conflicting schedules, you could literally see every band on the line up if you wanted to. Camping was a bit unorganized and the VIP camping area was super small. And it sucked to have to set up our tents at like 3:00 in the afternoon on Friday, they didnt open the gates till 1:30. They also screwed up by charging 11$ for the kids zone access. That was not advertised & they made it sound like the kids activities would be free, that disappointed a lot of families. As far as the music was, Marlon Asher's set was really nice. 7th st band sounded great. Fortunate Youth & Anahuea had some really strong sets too. Ky-Mani put on an AWESOME set but was getting fed up with the sound guy on the stage, he kept getting feedback from the PA & said something like "hey you over there, ive asked you to fix this problem with my mic and you can't fix it. maybe we should pull you off and get someone who can?" He brought his sons on the stage to perform for the very first time & the crowd loved it. Capleton was up next & was putting on a awesome set, but then this guy with long blond hair got up on stage not once but TWICE and gave Capleton a strong chest shove each time. The first time they tackled him, second time he was pushed off the stage into the photo pit & landed on his back. Their security was pretty lax & I think they slipped up big time on that. Also it was really frustrating to have to wait in the will call lines for us to get out wristbands instead of having them band you as you go in for camping. Didn't see a single cop the whole time, just saw a sherrifs patrol car driving through the camping area one time on Saturday. Other than some minor staff/security/logistic problems, this is a very promising event & I hope they stick around in Angels Camp.
Re: Reggae in the Hills 2013
June 10, 2013 02:37PM
Not just once but twice...at 1:50, and again at 3:55 or so...the second time he just gets thrown offstage. I mean, just going up & shoving Capleton in the chest like he wanted to fight him? Don't know what kind of drugs this guy was on...

jr bong was watching from backstage and it wasnt security the second time it was Jrs band leader trini artist King Schascha. the rumor is that the guy was a gay member of another band that played over the weekend. supposedly he was frying on halluciengenics of some kind. luckily my homie was there or fyah man could have been in a bit of trouble. How he was ale to get ack on stage so easily is kinda crazy.

Its pretty crazy that security didn't do anything others had to handle the crazy, there lucky that man didn't have a weapon, it was pretty intense I'm glad my singer was there to save the day, after words they kicked everyone out of the press area like in front row exept the iruselum band we were the only ones aloud In the press pit because we were with king schascha it was a great show

Reggae festivals use "volunteer" security. Most events use payed security. It is a huge liability to have a person thrown off of the stage. Im all for performers having their own security if they need it. The reality from a professional perspective is that anyone who is on the stage with out a job is a liability and at some point in the way of someone else trying to do their job. Often hangerons get in the way of security doing their job to protect performers and the audience.

Not to mention that sidestage and back stage has some of the worst sound quality in the entire place.
Re: Reggae in the Hills 2013
June 10, 2013 07:51PM
I totally agree papa about the security and the liability but I don't about sound when u get what the artist get from the monitors it sounds great they here everything
Re: Reggae in the Hills 2013
June 10, 2013 08:51PM
That blonde dude was rolling around in the dirt tripping out big time right behind me. He then randomly got up, said, Capleton needs a hug hella loud, and rushed the stage from about 30 feet back. He took out 5 people on his way to the stage including two teenage girls. He hopped the first fence and somehow got on stage. He got caught pretty quickly thank jah. The second time he got on stage was from the side. He got pushed off the stage really hard.

I saw him the next day being questioned by security in his camp site. His friends and band were not cool with him at all. He has a really big bandedged up arm. It had to be broken in a few places.

If you can't handle your drugs, you deserve what you get.

That festival was awesome. I will go every year if the lineup stays irie!!!!

Re: Reggae in the Hills 2013

When I first heard of this festival being held at Angels Camp I contacted them and volunteered to work any position.
I got a call from their volunteer coordinator. When she learned of my experiance as a driver (SNWMF 1998-2013) and knowing all the back roads between SFO, OAK,SAC and the venue she said they had a real need for drivers and That I should call "Jay" the transportation guy. I called Jay twice and never got a call back.
Needless to say, I can't have any good thoughts about a festival that blows people off with out an explanation

Re: Reggae in the Hills 2013
June 11, 2013 03:55PM
I thought this festival was great, especailly for only being in its second year. There seemed to only be a couple thousand people so the organizers were very relaxed about the entire camping experience which was actually nice. The venue was awesome, all shows starrted on time except for Steel Pulse, which didn't matter to me because they still played an awesome set. An encore would have been cool but I guess the curfew was at 12:30 and they played almost until 1:00 so it is what it is. I wasn't impressed with Marlon Asher at all, this was the second time I've seen him and I doubt I'll pay money to do so again.

Saturday Messenjah Selah had a great set in the middle of the afternoon heat. Ky-mani did a meet and greet with folks at the Mellow Mood vendor booth and was signing autographs and taking pictures with people before his set. He then proceeded to absolutely set the stage on fire for a little over an hour. He played all originals then ended with some Bob covers, which the crowd seemed to really dig. Capleton was also amazing, the best set I've ever seen from him. I was way impressed with how he handled the kid tripping on acid pushing him on two seperate occasions. He just played it off and didn't let the negativity affect his or the crowd's vibe. Mad respect to King Shango for that. Also, did anyone think his freestyle at the end of his encore was off the chain too? So sick! Sunday was pretty mellow, the only had one stage going. Anuhea was laid back and the ladies got into it. But I was really impressed with Inner circle. It was the first time I've seen them and their musicianship and vibe were great. They also rocked a long encore covering some classic and modern reggae hits.

I'll definitely be there next year.

I loved the fest and I will attend next year if they make it happen. I thought for their second year they did a great job. I can't imagine what goes into setting one of these things up but I can imagine its not easy. It was the first fest that I've been to solo and it was a memorable one and I thank them for that. My only suggestion to them is to move the fest to memorial day like when the mountain aire fest was around.
Re: Reggae in the Hills 2013

The Reggae in the Hills festival may have been pleasurable from a patrons POV, but to the 20 food vendors and probably 30 craft vendors this event was a total disaster. Campers were allowed to leave in and out all weekend with their cars, so they had no need to use any of the vendors. Even the liquor store/deli across from the Fairgrounds said all the people were driving to a supermarket close by to get all their food. Never mind the fact that there were probably as many vendors as SNWMF but a tenth of the attendance. As previously noted, the event was run on a wing and a prayer and people pretty much did whatever they wanted. If any of you attend this one next year bring your own food (again) because there won't be any vendors.

Did you have a booth? I had 3 friends with different booths and they all did great. One was the honey guy, the other was Blaze 1 and the taco guy in the bowl. They said they did excellent. 1 major difference between Sierra Nevada and Reggae In The Hills is the cost of the booth and each show's booth cost represents what they should sell.

This festival was very fun. Not one negative thing I could see. That kid getting thrown off stage was just funny to me. I personally would rather be just thrown off stage instead of thrown in jail.
BIG UPS to the people putting it on. I will be back next year and telling people how much fun I had this year.

BillyBud....sounds like the only thing that needs to change is that you dont show up next year! THe vendors I talked to said they didnt do great, but would not go as far as saying it was a total disaster. I think it was well put on for its second year. Looking forward to showing my support for the third year. Even the crepe lady (who was open til 3ish every night) did OK. It could use some tuning, but what festie doesnt need tuning. It was over 100 degrees out, we all had to sweat it out including the vendors. Sorry it didnt go your way.
