Wow, who would have thought in 1994 that Snoop and Outkast would stop the slack tunes. Doggystyle and Southernplayalisticaddilacmusic were real, not fake, Drake blows. Nobody is bumping this track in Richmond, CA, sorry. Snoop would not have the power to produce this video if it wasn't for guns.

I like it -- a powerful message for these times.

Doggystyle is passe, now's the time for Lionstyle. People evolve, either get with it or get over it.

Who cares what is bumping in Richmond.

Curious - if he hadn't made a big announcement about converting to Rastafarian, or the silly remark about reincarnation (although I really think it was meant figuratively) - would people be reacting the same way?

Well I can think of few dancehall artists that I would consider rapper/pop artists rather than what I consider real reggae, but I get your point. I like the tune personally. The riddim sounds like a deconstructed ADF riddim, and I've always liked their stuff...

while listening to my morning radio talk shows.. one commentator suggested if snoop was sincere he would donate all monies generated from his 'gun talk' tunes...

just relaying another point of discussion..

snoop and his family have done enough for my own grandmother and father, that i cannot really say anything on the man.

I just do not understand this opinion. How in the hell will he make more money in reggae than he would have in hip hop? Everyone knows Hip Hop is 100 X the market of Reggae. The move makes no sense from a financial standpoint. Any manager in his right mind would have warned against a move like this. Just sayin'.

If a rap artist sings slack, certain people get on him for not being conscious enough, and when one gets conscious, they call him a sell out. I think he is trying a bit too hard, but I know I overdid it as a 16 year old turning on to Rasta, and I see it all the time on the Internet. I believe his intentions to be sincere.

his proclaiming it so boldly is what makes it seem like a publicity stunt...

Give the man time. It's not for us to judge but to wait and see. He will make his intentions clear in time. If his intentions are important to you personally just be patient and they will be revealed, if not, let it go. Who can know what is in the next man's heart.? None a we.

As for this current tune, it's too fluffy for me... Easy to ride popular sentiment, (who isn't angry at 20 dead first graders?) Guns at home or not.

Appreciating all the input. I am wondering about all those who claim to know what Snoop is thinking and the intentions behind the album/project, how many of you have spoken directly to Snoop, Major Lazer, Jahdan, Moon, or anyone else directly involved in the project to get that information??? Seems to be a lot of experts/insiders on here.
To those who think it is about money, as someone who has run a reggae-record label for close to 2 decades now, I can assure the financial gains are minimal. Perhaps it is more about personal growth and development into something wiser and more positive. I know many people are doing the same thing they are doing when they are forty, as they were when they were twenty, but is that really a good look??? From years of observation and experience, I have seen it is impossible to please everyone in the "reggae scene" particularly in Cali, where we have a lot of "experts". But not sure that the goal of the project. Perhaps his audience is urban, black, american youth who are otherwise not exposed to reggae/Rasta. To give them something positive to listen to; something different other than the guns, sex, and drugs that are forced down their throats everyday. As a teacher in Oakland, I have seen this firsthand and it is wonderful. Perhaps the album will be successful in that regard, and not to please the already very critical "reggae massive". Food for thought.

As I said only time will tell, I never claimed to be an "expert" as you say.. And no need to take offence either.. Everything I said was strictly my opinion.. I see it as another passing phase.. Very similar to let's say snoops Country album!! Nobody knows what's in snoops heart, not major lazer, not lusterking!! Hopefully it does reach the young black youth as a change from violent lyrics and he contributes to the movement.. Maybe somebody finds it dope but I don't at all.. And I've listened to each song with open mind and open heart , really hoping the best outta this transformation.. Only time will tell.. Respect

Yes "Iriebarto"...wasnt offended at all. Actaully thanked you for your opinion. No. you did not say you were an "expert", but you tend to act/sound like one at times on this phorum. No one, but Snoop, knows what is in Snoop's heart, especially you. I have heard him (Snoop), through my colleagues, express his feelings and views on the project first hand.. Was asking if you have too??? Just speaking from expereince. Raspect always. Again, I appreciate the insight.

Yes Higrade1...I agree with you 100%. and I was saying IMO this is a good look for "pop music/culture" to be releasing a song like this from one of it's more recognizable faces.

Hoenstly, I havent been a fan of any of the tunes released until this point. Especially since they shorted Jahdan on the "Lighter's Up" tune. This one I think carries some power, especailly with the video. I myself have been critical of Snoop and his "transformation", questioning why and more importantly "how" he was doing it. but seeing/hearing my students (past and present) get excited about the tune and even giving Rasta any consideration is a good thing, as otherwise they'd just be listening to 2 chainz, wheezy, etc, and the rest of the F-ckery that is promoted to them all the time. I was only posting the tune and mentioning that it was a refreshing change from the usual garbage that the music industry (all genres) pushes on the masses, and excited for my colleagues to be a part of it.
BLESSED..

Althought I'm not a fan of the music Snoop is making right now and I'm not going to run out and buy the album, I do have respect for the fact that some people will be introduced and listen to reggae because of this project. I have a lot of friends who don't listen to much reggae unless I intorduce them to it, but if they hear Snoop is putting out a reggae album they may be inclined to check it out on their own...It may not be great music for hardcore reggae fans, but like LustreKing said, its far better than Weezy, Young Jeezy or any of that other dog @#$%& that passes as hip-hop/rap now. If more artists/people hopped on the "reggae bandwagon" it might not be a terrible thing

More reggae to the massive I say and if Snoop is trying to change his message and help bring reggae to the lime light then I'll give him his due respect, just don't expect me to buy the album....

ya pretty much sums it up.

I tend to take music on a song by song basis, as most artists have ups and downs. Although i dont care for most of Snoops recent music this one can get a solid pass. Good for him for using his position for positive. Of course Snoop gots his security and thing but that is not really the problem now is it.

Snoop Dogg was just here in Bend, OR. The report I got was that no Lion showed up. He played all the songs from Jin N Juice to aint nothing but a gangster party in honor of tupac. No reggae songs played. At the very end he yelled Jah Rastafari before he left the stage. Was wearing a red, green and gold beanie. He is no Lion. So much great reggae, no reason to promote him IMO.

THE SONG Sucks....What's the phrase "Shock-jock video"...Simply playing on the emotions of americans post-shooting....looks like it was made for his reality tv show about his family....a lot of these Lion tracks are just hip-hop with a Ching-ching and some fake patois.....But...he says "money makes the man" and he has already made his millions and now he can sing and do whatever he wants, if that is positive reggae so be it. If it was about money he'd jump on some dubstep band-wagon and produce with skrillex. I like his reggae-awaening I just wish he hadn't claimed "to be Bob Marley re-incarnated" that was ignorant and it does make a difference. Yo Gangstas check out some reggae. He could still put out pop-gangsta rap and sell mucho records.

promoters and fans alike arent going to pay to see snoop lion, his fame and popularity is based off of Snoop Dogg so thats most likely whos going to perform. I think its cool enough the man promoted rasta when he was done with his set. Mans gotta eat, and before you start railing about him having enough money already, go check on his charity works and all he does positivly with his time and money. Snoop Dogg is an entertainer getting paid to entertain, Calvin Brodus is in my opinion a good man and does good.things for his community and does everything to take care of.his family. If more people were like him and made sure to uift those around us, humanity might be in a better spot.

"What's the phrase "Shock-jock video"...Simply playing on the emotions of americans post-shooting"

Agreed. It is, but this what a lot of great musicians have been doing since the 60s. Making songs about current events that are close to the feelings of the people.
Was Bob wrong to record "Jah Live"?? Marvin Gaye, "What's Goin On?". Look at how many reggae artists put out tunes about 9/11, and many other current world events, before and after. Mainstream american music has been devoid of these kind of songs for years now. So don't see this as a bad thing necessarily.

the Snoop's "Bob Marley" comment was beyond ridiculous......maybe also to create a "shock"? But it was definately offensive to many.

I find the Marley family pimping bobs legacy to be waaaay more offensive than an immature comment by snoop.
The man Snoop is a genuine human being. Outside of the limelight if you see how he acts and helps people and is humble, you would have a different opinion. I would venture to say no one except LK and Moon on this board has met him personally, so maybe we should reserve personal judgement until we have some knowledge of the mans true works(outside of show-bizness). IMO.

Hearsay, which is another word for rumors, will always be challenged by me because I consider spreading rumors a form of lying. A person spreading rumors is asserting something as true when they simply do not know is it is true or not.

Just to clarify...LK was not involved in this song, project, album at all (Retirement is bliss). A couple of our key members (Moon and Jahdan Blakkamoore) were hired by the "Reincarnated" Team to write (lyrically/musically) several of the songs for the album, 6 I believe. Two have been released ("Lighter's Up" and this one). I was posting this latest track, as it was, IMO, a breath of fresh air from the usual garbage that is promoted by pop-culture. Then the Snoop bashing began, which seems to be a popular trend these days. So I felt compelled to offer some perspective. Give thanks for the reasoning.
BLESSED...
LK

"The report I got ... " is hearsay. If you want to cite a published review, then I would expect reading something like:

"According to this review <link to said review> ... "

The hearsay was from my Fiance. So I would say I trust my source. So yes I do know it is true.

So then you might have cleared up the issue by saying something like "According to my fiance, who attended the show..."

See, I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt by assuming that you fiance attended the show. If he/she didn't, well...

But I've been over this for a while now, so... Walter, out.

Do you need me to take a picture of her ticket stub and post it? LOL. Most people treat me with respect and understand that I am a person who does not lie or make things up. But that being said I do not know why I jumped on the Snoop bashing. He has never done anything to me. For that I was wrong.

For the record, I do respect you. I have enjoyed reading your posts. I like how enthused you are about Midnite, Groundation, NWWRF, and reggae music in general.

I appreciate that Walter. All a man has is his word and all he can ask for is respect. I to respect your love for Midnite, Groundation among other things! Are you an Orgegonian? Might I see you at one of the 3 Midnite shows in OR/WA ?

Well, from what I've read on this thread Rossta, you were not 'bashing' Snoop, just recanting what was said to you.

And, for the record, MOST "reporting" is "hearsay" Walter. Yes, you have the occasional "reporter on the scene" but, for the most part, it tends to be a lot more of "witnesses on the scene reported______", "first hand accounts of the incident are that _____" etc.

While you may equate repeating what others have said (hearsay) to be akin to a lie, most people require that a person have 'knowledge of falsehood" before a mi statement becomes a lie. Of course, "from all reports" Rossta's post was neither a lie nor a mi statement.....

I accept the correction, thanks Daniel. Thank you.

rossta888, my gates are in New Mexico. However, I have a brother who live in Cave Junction. My son, his wife, and my three perfect grandchildren all live in Medford. I hope that, one day, we will run into each other at a Midnite or Groundation concert. I would like to engage in some thoughtful reasonings.

I saw that Snoop "Lion" is playing at the Fillmore in SF this coming Saturday, 4/20. Tickets are a staggering $90 !! WTF?!?

I wonder how much of that money will be given to Rastafari communities in Jamaica and around the world by Snoop...

i saw the film as a combination of both... his experiences in jamaica with flash backs to his youth and past. the setting and backdrop was 95% of him in JA.. good stuff all the way through.

rating - 9/10
