The one thing that I don't understand is that Sunday has Hollie Cook and Prince Fatty on different stages. I'm pretty sure they will be using the same band. Sunday definitely will be spent running between those two stages.

That's correct rossta, unless you include Hollie Cook and Horseman, both of which will be taking to the mic during Prince Fatty's village stage set before Horseman gets behind his drum kit on the Valley Stage for Hollie's set on Sunday...

This has gotta be the best Sunday lineup in a few years at least. It'll be nice to get back to the village stage on a Sunday for a change. The main conflict, perhaps, is Fatuomata Diawara /Bombino running alongside Keith and TeX/ Errol Dunkley. But, these are problems we LIKE to have, right?

Niceness! I have watched Windy City's video's that have been posted here and dont plan on missing there set. Now it looks like sets!

Never heard of Hollie Cook or Prince Fatty but sounds like it is not one to be missed.

Saturday is awesome! Im thinking Iqulah and Windy City at the Village Stage and then get over the main stage for Protoje and the rest of the night. No way can I miss any of that run.
Re: SNWMF 2013 - Lineup by Day

Only four acts per day at the village stage? That seems a little unusual, as the day usually kicks off over there - but otherwise looking good!

Saturday and Sunday will again kick off on the village stage with Iqulah and Windy City one day and Abja & Prince Fatty the next. Except for Friday night, that will be the only reggae on the village stage save for Keith & Tex and Errol Dunkley who will perform there while Fatoumata Diawara and Bombino do their thing on the valley stage on Sunday evening....
Re: SNWMF 2013 - Lineup by Day

Those are going to be great sets to kick off the day! Nice work on Iqulah!!! That is a crucial add IMO.

Not that I'm hating, I'm just surprised to see K'naan in a headlining slot on Friday night. The guys has some decent tunes but I didn't think his body of work warranted a headline slot...maybe I need to give his recent album a closer listen
Re: SNWMF 2013 - Lineup by Day
April 30, 2013 05:16PM
Yeah, I was hoping for Groundation to headline on friday night. But I do look forward to a new musical experience friday night in K'naan. Saturday is going to be so sweet. No reason to leave the main stage once Protoje starts. Really looking forward to his set.

I am also looking forward to K'naan - haven't seen him since hos ROTR performance all those years ago. I also agree with you on Sattaday - Iqulah on the Valley stage first, then its off to the main stage for the rest of the day.

The line-up is so tight, that I'll hardly be in my camp the whole weekend.

Gotta start my training regimen...

I'm definitely not complaining, just was surprised is all. Both stages and the dancehall are full of great acts Friday night. And you're right, Saturday is stacked, definitely not making it back to camp that day!

Big up the SNWMF crew for making it happen!

Do not sleep on Knaan. I've seen all of fridays lineup a few times over with the exception of the Green, and I gotta say with all due respect to the other artists Knaan is slated right where he deserves to be.
Re: SNWMF 2013 - Lineup by Day
April 30, 2013 07:23PM
Walter, Windy City on the Valley Stage saturday will be epic as well from what I have heard and read! We seem to have similar musical tastes so thank you for the good review of K'naan! I normally always have a bit of time each day at festivals where i just chill at camp with buddies but this year I dont see that happening.

Thanks Redwood Rebel! I am all about ROOTS reggae music so I will check out the Uprising Roots band!

East Bay Herbalist everyone who has seen K'naan or are familiar with his music share a similar opinion that he is a great act. I have seen Groundation many of times so I look foreward to K'naan. I saw the Green a few years back at NWWRF and they were good. Not my style per say but a good band.

Getting excited everyone!!!

yes!!! Really looking forward to Windy City most of all. Love the vibes and the instrumental pleasure that comes across in the bodies. Excited about a live experience.

@ Rossta...I digg Groundation, love the Bob shows they do every February and think they are an extremley talented band. Not to impressed with the Green. My cousins husband is always trying to get me to go see them with him. Just doesn't resonate well with me. They are good musicians, just not my vibe.

Yes East Bay Herbalist those Groundation Bob shows are amazing! I miss living in Sonoma County sometimes. I hope they will come to Oregon for the next Bob celebration. Ever seen Rockamovya? Pretty cool they are at ROTR. Would love to see that show.

I've seen K'naan a couple times, but its been a few years. He opened for Damian and Stephen Marley on a tour back in '06 or '07. I also saw him play one night at Earthdance, maybe 2008. Both sets were great, he seems to really enjoy his live shows. Always smiling and interacting with the crowd. I'm sure he'll bring it Friday night, I'll just have to catch up on some of his newer stuff beforehand.

I could see where some reggae fans may not like The Green as they do have more of a "mainstream/pop" sound to them than bands/artists coming out of JA and Europe, but I saw them perform last month and the guys are a talented band. They can all sing and their bass player can bring it too

I am glad that Leroy Sibbles is on Sunday. That is a nice spot for his show! Anyone seen him live before? Does he bust out any Heptones tracks? Does he have solo stuff? Does he ever play the bass still? I am way behind on my Leroy Sibbles music and knowledge. Give thanks in advance for info!

Re: SNWMF 2013 - Lineup by Day

@rossta888

Saw Leroy Sibbles headline just a couple of Sundays ago on April 14th at the 2nd annual Galveston Reggae Festival. He was backed by Errol Lee and the Bare Essentials band who had a very nice horn section. I've seen Leroy solo and with the Heptones a number of times over the years and I won't hesitate to say he is a consummate performer and loves to work the crowd, not to mention a super cool cat to reason with. ..At the Galveston festival a few weeks ago, he played 'Party Time', 'I shall be released' 'Equal Rights' Country Boy' Sea of Love' 'Love Won't Come Easy' and a 'livicated to Barry Llewllyn Book Of Rules', among some others. Also, he did a stirring rendition of Marcia griffiths 'Feel Like Jumpin' which had everyone skanking. Leroy's voice sounded as good here in Houston as it did in Vancouver in 1994, when I first saw him- I'm tellin' you bwoy! If he would just play 'Ting a Ling' ...................

My favorite of those songs i think is Love Right, Live Right:

Love Right (Live Right)

Ah ha ah ha a
Ah ha ah ha a
Ah ha ah ha a
Ah ha ah ha a

Love right, live right, love right, live right
Yeah everything is gonna be alright
If I and I love right and I live right

Love right, live right, love right, live right
Yeah everything is gonna be alright
If I and I love right and I live right

So Rasta can’t tell nobody what to think
Rasta can’t force nobody to believe I
If people no want fe begin with the reality
And work their way to reach the ideal I
Our emotions are letters of urgency
We don’t stop check nor bother to read
You can’t search ina the pulpit nor the University
Just deal with internal scrutiny

I man a say love right, live right, love right, live right
Yeah everything is gonna be alright
If I and I love right and I live right

Time is not counted from day light
But from midnight, but from midnight
Yeah
Everything is gonna be alright
If I and I love right, and I live right

And a true
Ah ha a ha a
Ah ha a ha a
Ah ha a ha a
Ah ha a ha a

Babylon division of labor
Made every man dependent on his neighbor
Now in the hectic hostile speed of survival behavior
Man and his neighbor are stranger
So the census keep on a counting
Because they sense us accumulating
But the faster that the earth deh ya
Rotating upon the axis
The slower things appear to be moving
Hold on and

Love right, live right, love right, live right
Yeah everything is gonna be alright
If I and I love right and I live right

Time is not counted from day light
But from midnight, but from midnight
Yeah
Everything is gonna be alright
If I and I love right, and I live right

False solutions watch them coming
with their band-aid
To cover your open heart surgery
The wind don’t respect limitation
The wind don’t accept no man made boundary
Well in the name of the new born baby
They purpose to do their violent deeds
When them in the slaughter ya of the infants
The infantry is what them call their kill man machinery

I man say love right, live right, love right, live right
Yeah everything is gonna be alright
If I and I love right and I live right

The ancient builder is the architectural
superior to everything contemporary
an should have learned what not to emulate
Man should have learned what not to repeat
It is apparent that the oppressor’s child is a parent
He don’t respect land nor sea
So Wall Street is the high crime center of the earth
Not southeast Washington DC

I man say love right, live right, love right, live right
Yeah everything is gonna be alright
If I and I love right and I live right

Yes and a true
Aha aha a, hold Jah
Aha aha a, never leggo Jah
Aha aha a, hold Jah
Aha aha a

Love that reggae!

Agreed, AJ.
They are all good, but LKJ and Dennis Bovell Dub Band are in another league altogether.

I'd travel a long, long way to see LKJ and DBDB play again,
and I'll walking the festival grounds, getting food, beer, and my t-shirt on the way to the dancehall when Groundation hits the stage, again....
Re: SNWMF 2013 - Lineup by Day
May 08, 2013 02:51PM
I'm probably going to miss Groundation's performance in favor of the Village stage, but not because of a lack of talent:

'One More Day(Live it up)'

People if i had only one more day
I'd live my life right i would
I would find a way to love everyday,
All people as i should
And as they walk let them talk
Let them talk about yesterday
Standing alone, mounting their sin upon sin
With nothing within
People if i had only one more time to groove yea
People if i had only one more time to move,
I'd let my soul groove
Live it up, live it up,
No you can't(can) go on forever
Live it up, live it up, ya can't (can) go on forever

People if i had only one more day
I'd live my life right i would
I would find a way to love everyday,
All people as i should
And as they walk let them talk
Let them talk about yesterday
Dreaming alone, yes i wish the best for you,
Now what you gonna do?

Live it up, live it up you can't(can) go on forever
No you can't(can) go on forever
Jah jah kingdom forever

Mulligan: I don't see any reference to the term "hater" in any of Nomo's posts here. I'm guessing you were referring to Reggabe's post and, to that end, I agree with you. Not feeling or not liking something does not, imo, constitute being a 'hater'.

No hating, just joking, although I really did take a great nap during their set last time.

Actually, I enjoy kicking back and letting one of those "trancey" bands like Midnite or Groundation put me to sleep. The fact that they tend to do so is not, IMHO, a bad thing.

LKJ with Dennis Bovell was Prob. 1 of the most Crucial Performances of 2012! STRAIT~>
I'm Just Not that big of a Groundation fan I guess... I do enjoy a few of their tunes as I do Midnite But feel that the Tempo/Vibe Never Changes with these two Bands. In any Case, It would be Disrespectful to Miss Down Beat Over Groundation tongue sticking out smiley

I was so dissapointed to not make it last year and miss LKJ. Was a great show I hear ! Glad you really enjoyed it. I just thought that maybe you found his style boring as well. That was it.

You must have felt that way about LKJ last year I am guessing Juanlove.

LKJ & Dennis Bovell Dub Band is not a "snoozer" act. Groundation & Midnite are not & will not be in the same league ~ ever. Please show some respect to the masters.
Have a irie day. winking smiley

How did I not show respect to LKJ?? I am a big fan and love his music. IMHO Midnite will go down as one of the all time greats and yes that means bigger than LKJ.

I am always having an irie day! Hope you are too!

Nothing against Midnite, Groundation or you. Just a difference of opinion & musical tastes.
I am having a irie day, glad you are too.
Respect.

Heard AJ!!! I just wanted to make sure you knew that I meant no disrespect to LKJ and the Dennis Bovell Dub band. I guess in my mind people that didnt like Midnite would find LKJ boring too. I love that people have different tastes in music! That is what makes music so special. See you in Boonville AJ and Juanlove! Look forward to meeting everyone this year at the meet up!

Man, I am still trying to figure out how I will last through the whole day Saturday. Starting with Iquilah in the a.m., all the way 'till the dancehall with no breaks except for maybe Marcia Griffiths. Gonna have to train for this one... smiling smiley

Mulligan-- so using "hater" makes one 15 huh? Not in my book. I just get sick of people taking potshots at Midnite, that's all, even though I realize it was a joke J-72. I just get a little defensive, because to me, if you love reggae, I just can't understand how one would not like Midnite. I mean, yes they are pretty mellow and trance-like, but so what? So is Burning Spear, and probably everyone on this board likes them! And NOBODY can touch the spiritual poetry of Vaughn. Just look at the lyrics Nomo posted above and tell me you don't see the depth and quality there! In my mind the man is a genius, and the band will be considered legends one day, just like LKJ...

Reggabe, with all due respect, you are just going to have to deal with the fact that not everybody likes Midnite. They still are very popular, but are not everybody's cup of tea. I have to tell you honestly, that I loved them when they first hit the scene, but now think they have been overexposed and sometimes get irritating because so many of their songs sound the same. The last time I went to a show that they headlined, I was bored stiff because it sounded like they were playing the same song for 2 hours.

How can u campare Midnite to Burning Spear ..I agree with Jah Mike totally ..

To each their own. I would rather listen to Midnite than Burning Spear. I love Burning Spear, I drove 12 hours to see him in Santa Rosa last year but would still rather see or listen to Midnite. No disrespect to the elders, i just love Midnite that much.

Reggabe we seem to have similar tastes in music. Look forward to linking with you at the Festival. I too will be at Iqulah and Windy City early saturday morning before catching the uprising roots band till the Marleys walk on stage.

Ok, ok, gotta weigh in on this one at long last. First and foremost, I don't really understand how anyone can be a fan of Roots Reggae and dislike Midnite. But I've heard some old school reggae afficianados-with an ingenuous admission of responsibility- give Benjamin and Co. the brush off with a "well I guess that explains all the hoopla for outfits such as Midnite and the like"- usually in response to what they believe to be pathetically naive analyses or opinions regarding the reggae scene at large in Northern cali and elsewhere.

Why does Midnite take the brunt for this kind of frustration?

Sometimes, IMO , even the most ardent reggae seer or respected codgerly scribe can be taken aback by the truth when it is staring them in the face. Midnite's lyrics are startling and unnerving because they challenge everyone to face the truth, no matter how painful it may be. Sometimes, cynicism finds the wrong outlet.

I say... Some Never Plant yet want to Reap,
Be careful, try to look before you leap;
Took a little walk from my Vineyard...
Now I'm all alone..

Midnite is to Roots Reggae
as
Neil Young is to Country Music

Vaughn and Ron are the Neil Young's of roots reggae? Wow, that is a compliment. You make example of one of the most intelligent, driven, ornery, vital and successful rock musicians alive today. No wonder i like midnite.

Love that reggae!

not really comparing Midnite to Neil Young (and I do agree with what you say about him).....I am saying that Neil Young is to Country (some of his tunes are sorta countryish but he is definitely not country) as midnite is to roots reggae (some of their stuff is sorta roots reggae-ish but they are definitely not roots reggae).
Thats what I'm saying.
And I'm not hating.
I just can't get into their hippy dippy droning songs. As I've said before - i think of midnite as the Greatful Dead of reggae....NOT that they are as good or popular as the Dead but that they do a lot of hippy dippy droning type songs.

While it is true that Vaughn does lots of albums with other promoters, there are really only 9 Midnite studio albums - Unpolished, Ras Mek Peace, Jubilees of Zion, Seek Knowledge Before Vengeance, Intense Pressure, Scheme A Things, Ainshant Maps, What Makes a King and Anthology.

Mulligan: Can you name one track off those 9 albums that you don't consider to be "roots reggae"? I've listened to all those albums a time or two and can't think of one track that I wouldn't put in the category of roots reggae......

I don't know any midnite songs and i'm not gonna go to youtoob and find examples. I hear midnite on [www.ireggae.com] and to me it does not sound like any roots reggae.

Yo J 72 you stirred it up for real man. I believe Midnite kept roots music alive in a tough time for Reggae. Am I wrong?
Ainshant Maps to mention just one is all roooooots! Respect...
