Not even close.
And Steel Pulse is one of my favorite all-time bands, of any genre.
Great songwriter though.

Well, Roger will always be known as 'Mr Bob Marley' but he's never been known for having a very discerning ear when it comes to Reggae in it's broadest aspects.

aah, so you're a "get in line with the talking heads" kind of guy? i don't really rate roger's opinion, and choose instead, to use my own ears to form my own opinion.

Meh, I respect Steffans contributions as a historian, but I tend to tune him out anytime I hear him speak.

So then, oh thee High Masters of the Court, who is worthy of your most knowledgeable and prestigious nominations for "arguably best reggae singing voice ever" ; )

I humbly nominate Dennis Brown, Garnett Silk, and Alton Ellis off the top of my head...

Side note - I recently heard Hinds did not sing "Your House" (one of their finer vocal songs imo), and my google searches yielded no answers. Anyone know the deal with this?

Dennis Brown, Dennis Emanuel Brown, Georgie Porgie cool smiley

Oh yeah, there is something so genuine and moving in just about all of Delroy's songs.

Not sure if it's the pure emotional aspect that some singers are able to acheive but it seems to be a factor that gets me hooked ---- and not many do it better when it comes to singing with emotion than Freddy McKay.

But other singers like that, that can almost do no wrong include Jackie Bernard and Lloyd Robinson.

Then there's the smoother side of singing too that's always fun to hear and lately I can't seem to get enough of Jimmy London.

That's a great thing about Reggae, lists upon lists of singers that aren't bad singers per se but their lyrics carry their tunes - but then there are those few artists that could sing the menu board at McDonalds and all you'd wanna do is super-size that order [how McCheesy was that spinning smiley sticking its tongue outtongue sticking out smiley]

Wow...tough crowd for Rojah Steffans here....all he did was help push reggae to the world.

Anyways...back to David Hinds...he did a lot, Steel Pulse did a lot in forwarding the message and the vibe. I miss those days. Who has the sweetest voice is purely subjective.

Thanks for the interview. I respect Mr. Hinds..

Not entirely.
Ppl with an ear for music notice when a singer is off key.
Not to mention a vocalist's range etc.
As far as a person's FAVORITE vocalist, yes, that's subjective.

perfect example jeff. a seriously BIG tune, but not great singing.

when I say that I do not think david hinds is in the realm of potential candidates for best singers in reggae, this doesn't mean I de-value steel pulse or their contributions. not at all -- two different things.

I don't care about his singing one way or the other- I think he has a good voice, but again that's subjective. I respect him for the work he has done, and continues to do.

For best voices I'm partial to Horace Andy, DEB, Freddie McGregor, Hugh Mundell, Alton Ellis is tops. Sylvan White is very underrated IMHO. Bob Marley had an incredible voice but the voice gets overlooked for the songwriting, etc. Almost forgot Glady Anderson.

I was on my way to Shanghai last weekend and I was walking through the ABQ airport on my way to my gate and I spied a gentleman walking toward me sporting a nice t-shirt with Yellow Wall Dub Squad emblazoned on the front. As we passed, I greeted him by name, as I recognized the brother.

"Love your band, Mr. Tafari - have a great show!"

That stopped him his tracks and he spun around and hailed me. I stopped and we had quite a nice chat. He was in town to play at the San Felipe Casino just north of Albuquerque (Steel Pulse, the Wailers, Tribal Seeds) that nice. Amlak and I chatted for about 10 minutes, talking about the upcoming show, music in general and playing bass in particular. I left the conversation with my spirits lifted - what a cool, kind, positive brother. Just as we were wrapping up, David Hines strolled up and Amlak introduced us. Mr. Hines was very cool as well and tried to break me off back-stage passes to the show and an invite to hang out. Alas, I had to decline... I was being Shanghai'd, literally.

Got to my gate and said to myself, "Dang, I forgot to get a picture" - so it goes. An auspicious start to my trip, to say the least.

Walter, great story. Sometimes things just happen for a reason, eh?
