How do you measure "biggest"?
Re: What's the biggest Reggae Band/Artist in the USA?

Still Bob Marley

SOJA, Rebalution

For artists based out of the USA, is that your question?

Otherwise anyone named Marley

I mean any Reggae artist that considers themselves American. Do the Marley's consider themselves Americans?
For me I see it as Shaggy, Rebelution and SOJA. IM just curious who people think is the biggest name for US reggae. I am also curious to see who rocks the crowd harder… SHAGGY or REBELUTION. Well Shaggy will definably rock it harder, but I think Rebeution has the fan base.

Is shaggy American because he served in the military? I would imaginary shaggy identifies as a Jamaican , as most West Indians I know living in the states consider themselves from wherever they born and grow.
Biggest reggae artist that considers themselves american,,..... I don't know if that exists
There's plenty of big headed Americans playing reggae music though....instrument or mp3

On second thought maybe midnite.... They have a fanatical fan base and USVI & DC
Re: What's the biggest Reggae Band/Artist in the USA?

Anyone that has done service in the armed forces I would consider an American.
We can add Midnite to the list but I don't think they are nearly as big as Rebelution or Shaggy. When Midnite plays in my town they play at a 21 plus venue and have 200 people. When Rebelution plays they sell out a 1000 person venue a week in advance.

They are from the US Virgin Islands. They are US citizens with US passports. Therefore, they are american

Shaggy was born in JA and raised in Brooklin. He is not American.

So a Mexican immigrant who was born in Mexico but is now a citizen is not an American? I disagree, wholeheartedly.

J Boog is definitely rising up there.

Wasn't Stephen Marley born in (and currently resides in) the US? I wouldn't be surprised if a few of the Marley's fit that bill.

I consider American to be the 50 states. US VI is not America, definitely not culturally. And that's what I think of when I see best American reggae band. They may have U.S. passports, but I wouldn't call them American just like I wouldn't call some one who was born in Puerto Rico but lives in NYC American, they would be Puerto Rican. A Mexican-born American would be Mexican-American. To me there is a difference, but maybe it's a case of apples & oranges...

That is quite the slippery slope you've built there, Reggabe.
Re: What's the biggest Reggae Band/Artist in the USA?
April 11, 2014 06:17PM
lol, yes Walter, after I posted that I realize I didn't know WTF I was talikng about. So let me just retract it right now.

What I will say is that when I think of "American Reggae bands", I think of SOJA, Rebelution, Groundation, John Brown's Body, etc. I don't think someone who got their start outside the U.S. but then re-located to the U.S., such as Midnite or Shaggy, qualifies as "American Reggae". I doubt Midnite sees themselves as "Americans", but you'd have to ask them. I stand by my stance that U.S. territories, such as Guam or U.S. Virgin Islands, don't qualify as "America".

As for the original question, I'd say J-Boog or Groundation are the biggest American reggae artists.
Re: What's the biggest Reggae Band/Artist in the USA?

Really though, if some one is in Europe, and they said, "I'm American" the European wouldn't think he/she was from Mexico. It seems only Americans get caught up in "it's all America" vibe.

I live in Guam and I can assure you that we are "American", as is everyone else that lives in South America, Central America, and North America, (Canada and the USA, including all it territories - Guam, Puerto Rico, US VI and American Samoa).

People that live in the USA do not own the term "American"

I don't believe we own the term American, but if I was in Germany and I said I was "American" they would assume I was from the US, not Canada or Latin America.

Yes they would, J_72, they would immediately know you are from the US. They would laugh at you and call you a conceded pig-dog and probably take your sunglasses off of your face. Then remind you that there is both North and South American continents.

At least, that was my experience. Never made that self centered mistake again.

Wow - what a gross generaliztion. As a point of fact, you would not know that a German (or anyone) would assume if you self-identified as an "American", unless you psychic (which you are not).

Of course, you may give off other clues that may tip them off to your nationality:

- Going to MickeyD's instead of eating local cuisine.
- Bring the Jersey Shore attitude (fist-pumping and general aggressiveness).
- Not respecting a country's history. Such as being shown a monument that is thousands of years old and is a World Heritage Site (think Stonehenge), saying 'Yeah, we have old stuff in the States, this ain't that great.'
- Speaking loudly to non-English speakers in English.
- Expecting the host country to be like the U.S.
- Always asking questions about the weather and worrying too much about it. How's the weather gonna be... tomorrow? Who cares?
- Going to another country and getting mad when the locals in their own country don't speak English.
- Complaining about smaller food portions.
- Dressing like a slob.
- Assuming women want to sleep with you because you're from the U.S.

Wow, what a gross generalization. And while I'm no expert on psychic abilities, I'm sure what I said is a valid statement that would be proven more often than not if you and I were taking a trip to Germany.

I don't believe I've ever heard this band - but I do feel fairly safe saying that Inka Inka would give them a run for that title!

In my experience, when Europeans say American, they are typically referring to US citizens, not Nicaraguans, Panamanians, etc. Not sure about Germans specifically, but I did run into that in Italy, France and GB.

I'm gonna have to say Slightly Stoopid. I'm not a fan myself, but they are the top of the US reggae/alt.reggae/Neo Reggae/ bracket.

That is to say for current reggae bands, otherwise Sublime would hold the title.

There's a definition for american. there's a definition for us citizen. But we all know what American Reggae is. It's not a compliment. Midnite is VI. I don't care where they live now. It's roots music stick to your roots. What's your accent. Arnold Schwarzenegger may have been governor of California but as long as he talks like that he will always be from Austria number one.
