What happened Saturday?

Starting with Bitty McLean (great set) and continuing through shaggy - there was absolutely no energy from the crowd at the big stage. Bitty caught the crowd BS'ing him when he started a song and the crowd cheered for the song , then held up the mic to the crowd and MAJOR SILENCE..."you don't know this song" says Bitty...i thought that was funny...He received a tepid response when his set ended. Same with Mykal Rose, outstanding set yet very little energy and again a tepid response to the set.
now shaggy - even he couldn't get the crowd revved up, even with the large number of imported frat boys. he'd get a response to "where's my reggae people" or whatever but it would soon die down. when his set was over and he left the stage, DJ tried to get an encore but after an extremely feeble shaggyshaggyshaggy crowd "chang" this fizzled out too. I think shaggy told stage dj (spliff skankin) just after shaggy left the stage that he wasn't coming back out....OK, let's get the stage ready for the fire dancers....

small stage Friday was the highlight for me....Chuck Fenda, Josey Wales & Clinton Fearon were really really good.

the set that Jah Warrior played before shaggy was fantabulous....what a great mix...

All that extra shade cover was ( i am sure) most appreciated by all the blankets and empty lawn chairs taking up the shade that actual people could have used. Those who come in and homestead a shady area and then leave should just put their stuff out in the sun so those who want shade can find some room under those big covers.

AVBC was, as usual, the sensible place to camp. Lots of room SHADE SHADE SHADE relatively clean portapotties. The only negative was the blessking "sound system" who insisted on playing their 2 mix tapes until waaaaaaaaay past midnite both thursday & friday (coming back from dancehall Friday about 1:30, they were blasting away and both occupants of their tent were nodded out). Bless King -next year camp in the jungle....your late nite parking lot dancehall scene will go over real big there. Just try to mix up a couple more tapes (altho the 2 you played were good).

Thank you SNWMF....

boomtown where you at!!!! sorry shaggy boomtown is a shitty casino in nevada. the selector on before shaggy got the crowd way more hyped up. shaggy seriously fell short. we left soon after boombastic, which was a terrible version of arguably his best song.

i thought bitty killed it but maybe the energy wasnt there, long day in the hot sun and all that.

total bs what was going on under the shade structures. we got a spot on sunday under the structure closest to the merch table around 10:30am. there were a ton of spots that were used maybe 10% of the day. i gave this one douche in front of us that hadn't been there all day a talking to when he came to collect his crap after barrington. told him he had no shame and that a lot of people would have appreciated that spot. the festy should put up signs around the structures saying if space isn't occupied please feel free to take it until the "owners" return sort of thing.

you forgot to mention the stank from the @#$%& pond at avbc and all the bugs it attracted. thank jah the mozzies weren't biting. wanted to give that place a try but its beat, especially the distance. next year back to the jungle for us.

Rule #1 for camping (either at AVBC or the jungle) - Don't park near the portapotties....
yeah the toxic ponds were stinky but the aroma didn't make it to where I was camped.

poor shaggy couldn't figure out if he was in boomtown or Boomville...he would have better luck "getting 2 women pregnant" at boomtown tho.

I agree it was a weak crowd Saturday….There's a lot of locals and others that just go for the party and don't care about the reggae. That and you have a crowd of rebelution fans that don't listen to much reggae. I think this has diluted the amount of actual reggae fans in the crowd.….This was eveident by the pathetic lack of applause for Sly and Robbie and Mykal Rose. This is why Shaggy doesn't have to put on a quality set of his consciuos singles and rare tracks and earn crowd respect. He just played a few hits, had his pelvic thrust seisures, and wasted a bunch of time with a bunch of garbage. He'll still make big money off his albums. furthermore why did Barrington keep calling us Movado?..He's been there enough to know better.

you don't need a sign to occupy an empty shade structure. I just do it until the owners return, then smile and say "Hi". smiling smiley

Can't speak for anybody else. I was up skanking, cheering, and screaming all through the Sly and Robbie portion of the set. I am not a big fan of artists trying to get the audience to sing when they themselves are not singing. My attitude is they are being paid the big bucks to be on stage singing. Most of us ordinary folks can barely carry a tune.

Saturday was Great! Starting with Prezident Brown's heartical performance and music, then Bitty McClean was a nice treat for sure! Mykal Rose and Sly and Robbie, consistently great! BUT SHAGGY?!?! So here's the thing: I personally expect ALOT from someone like Shaggy, he has money to make good music and he should utilize his platform to perform good music and not rely on serving his "guests" purely "leftovers" from the 90's. His performance set from Saturday night was showed a total lack of respect for the music, the crowd, the promoter, the musicians who he works with in that he artistically put forth nothin new, nothin from his new album and nothing of real value. I have always been a fan of Shaggy and what platform he has created for himself and others and hope he takes the criticism of his performance on Saturday night seriously. My comments and criticism are solely pertaining to his inability to truly entertain the entire crowd with something artistic. His "turnt up" gimmicks and his relying on serving the people purely "leftovers" as far as his repertoire was concerned was an artistic disaster. Sure people love hearing those old time party tunes, but come on!!! I read all of the previous comments and about 80% say that while they love hearing the old hits, they want something new, more mature, more artistic and lyrically relevant. If we all have a "brick" in the great wall of reggae as I feel I do then we should expect more from our fellow "bricks" when it comes to respecting the work that goes into stage show performances! It is because I love Shaggy that I say this and maybe I will have the opportunity to say it to him directly and this is what I would say.... (gimme a minute ; )

This is what I would like Shaggy to hear: Yes he had the BEST musicians up there on stage with him, so why the hell did he have them leave the stage for so long??? Why didn't he play any of the songs off his new album he just released with Sly and Robbie? Did he have a falling out with them or sumthin cause I didn't hear ANY mention of that album or any of the songs from that album...Thats' what I want to know. What is going on really? Can we get a listen to the soundboard recording of that Shaggy set that night? Why would Shaggy not promote that album, it was just released in December of 2013 not that long ago... what a professional waste of time, energy and good musicianship to just sleep on the opportunity to let the fans hear some of those songs LIVE!!! all of those musicians who worked on that album should be pissed!!! he's not respecting the "art" of music by not performing these songs and promoting the album, wasting everybody's time... everybody from fans to promoters (sorry Warren Smith for Shaggy's lackluster unprofessional performance) He was probably thinking Shaggy would have done the majority of these new tunes mixed with a few of the old tunes and that's probably why he booked him based on the release of a good album that unfortunately didn't get any respect on Saturday night and in turn he will probably miss out on alot of units sold (not sold) due to a very weak stage show performance... that left most of us (who have a discerning taste for quality music) with a bad taste in our mouths. "Was he not feeling well?" "Was he in a beef with Sly and Robbie?" Wha Gwan Shaggy? Yuh done? ready for retirement? No time fi rehearse all your new songs? WHAT??? Inquiring minds wanna know... Wha Gwan?(I left halfway through cause my son got board and was "done" listening to Shaggy and his beggin people to get "turnt up" and asking them if they were tired? (no Shaggy we are not tired, but we are getting tired of these gimmicks and leftovers) TBC...

Someone gets it! That's exactly how it works at Cali WorldFest, you can lineup early with the other folks to setup your chair in front of the stage, but the festival rules are that any unoccupied chairs are open to anyone until the owners return. Don't hate on the early risers who got up in time to stake a claim (I was one - and offered my blanket to everyone in need, and saw it getting use several times when we were returning, etc.). Maybe next year we need to make a similar, official policy. I don't think any attendees would mind sharing the shade in such a way! You can't seriously expect groups of people to pick up their blanket/chairs every time they leave the Valley Stage now do ya? SHARING is the key...(especially if you can't be in line by 10)

My wife and I like to set-up kind of early at the valley stage but we don't worry too much if people use our blanket when we are at the village stage or eating or whatever. And at night we expect our "space" to largely diminish to standing room only due to the influx of the crowd.

well said and agreed REggaebe, Jah Mike , and Irie 411….
I have never seen an artist that doesn't feature mostly his new album. Shagg's got so many good singles too. He could have tore it up. Shaggy shows in the 90's was better. when he had to prove he belongs in the dancehall. Before the @#$%& show it wasn't me. He has a great voice. WTF.
Re: What happened Saturday?
June 28, 2014 05:05PM
….also…….Michael Rose is my favorite voice. It was a very good show. But i didn't like him yelling at me "What's my name!!!!" Like we must obey as trained fans. I'm not your Bit$h. yes massa michael. Next time I'm gonna yell. "WHO'S your biggest fan!!!!!" reallllly LOud! ! or maybe just, "WHO's Your Daddy! I know it's been his gimmick for a long time, but stop yelling at me.

Nailed it irie 411.
Also,
Mykal rose has failed to wow in all the times I've seen him in Cali since his 10+ year absence. He's got a good voice, seeing him with sky and Robbie is niiiice . Where is the energy and fire that I had seen before the hiatus though. Totally agree about the who's your daddy BS.

From a personal view, I can't agree with this approach. Thus, I've been bringing my own shade to these festivals for the last 25 years in the form of two staked beach umbrellas. Don't like the community shade thing, everyone bunched in tighty together, stepping over each other to get in and out. I dont mind being in back where I can have my own little space. Also, I don't like just anybody sitting in my chair or on my blanket. My wife and I have got our backpacks there next to the chairs with many valuables like cameras, phones, etc....It would be way too easy for some lowlife to sit in your chair and steal your valuables. Some people are even brazen enuff to go into your cooler...Nice, eh?

Family sized tentstyle shade structures were allowed in back. The views were better every where this year, and it was much easier to navigate around the valley stage field with the big shade structures. It was a nice improvement, despite some bad vibes Saturday when the security folks were enforcing the new reality.

I always thought he was asking how to SPELL his name....

and I also thought his set Saturday nite was outstanding.

I agree Mulligan, Michael Rose was on point, he killed it in my opinion, was so nice to see him with Sly and Robbie and that was one wicked performance. I wish they would have played all night and we just skipped shaggy. I am going to ROTR also this year and part of the reason I want to go is I have to see Rose with Sly N Robbie again.

i'm not sorry that i stayed and watched shaggy's set. it certainly wasn't what i normally listen to. i thought his female backup singers (especially
the one hiding stage left) were outstanding. i was also happy to hear some Mungo Jerry...shaggy & rayvon cracked me up.

and i will say again that Jah Warrior's set before shaggy was killer. if anyone has it recorded (doubtful) i would love to have it....
