Max Romeo and Admiral Tibet at SNWMF were the best shows for me this year...

I love Midnite's last album Ride Tru, one of my favorite I Grade Midnite albums. My favorite tune on the album is Worry Free!

I also enjoyed Lustre King's Jahdan Blackamore album Order of distinction and my favorite tune was Smood Blakk skin!

Not a good year for me catching live sets, but Ziggy Marley came to Bend, OR and killed it! Love Ziggy Marley. (yes I know you all dislike him but it was the best show I caught this year and am grateful he came to Bend!)

our reference point is different.. when you been to shows of the late 90s early 2000s.. during that whole fiya bun era, then you then you will see things differently.

big up ziggy's works still..

BV,

Sadly the only live Reggae music I caught this year was Ziggy, Rebelution and Tribal seeds as that is what draws here in Bend, OR. Selling my business and starting with a new company was a good thing for my professional career but not for me travelling for music. For the first time since 06 I did not attend a reggae festival last summer and I didn't make it down to Cali to see Akae Beka because of a soccer injury and then it was my lady and my two year anniversary on the night of Israel Vibrations playing here in Bend and I could not attend the show. It has been a year of growing up for me, I now have responsibilities and cannot run off to Eugene, Portland or NorCal to see shows like I used too.

I think even if I was around for the Fya burn era I would still be a big fan of Ziggy, I saw Capleton in Portland a few years ago and was the worst live show I have ever seen. Not saying that Capleton is not a legend and epic because he is, it was just not my cup of tea and I would not have known that if I didn't go. That being said I still rate Buju's show in 2008 at SNWMF one of the best I have ever seen and want to see Sizzla more than anyone not named Dezarie or Akae Beka.

sizzla, capleton circa 1999, 2000, 2001 lights out..

I could only imagine it was an amazing show! Have you ever heard of any reasons why he doesn't tour much anymore in the USA? I cannot remember the last time he was headlining here in CA or the NW.

Bucket list someday - see Sizzla live

The other one is see Midnite/Akae Beka live in the VI

Sizzla's US Visa was revoked in 2008 and he has been unable to secure a visa since that time despite several attempts. In 2013, He was given his I-129 and O1-B Status but was denied a visa when his interview "did not go well"....

Thanks Daniel for chiming in, I thought that was the case and the problem. So we wont be seeing Sizzla at SNWMF anytime soon sadly.

I'm really loving the new Iba Mahr album. Not sure if it's my favorite reggae album of 2015, but in the running for sure. I enjoy it start to finish a lot more than Protoje's album that dropped this year.

Considering that Sizzla has and continues to make it clear that he "Na Apologize" I would be VERY surprised to ever see him on the SNWMF bill ever again.
Re: Favorites of 2015?
December 17, 2015 07:49PM
The more you look at it the more Sizzla seems like an ass and not a good representation of the music and culture but I don't know that much about him so I shouldn't judge. But I do rate a lot of his songs and I know his live performance would be epic and I would love to witness that.

My all time favorite soccer player Roy Keane was an ass but also the best midfield general I have ever seen the game and I would pick him for my squad every time. You don't always have to be a nice person to be successful but it is better to be both IMHO
Re: Favorites of 2015?
December 17, 2015 08:11PM
I have seen Sizzla play multiple times over the past 15 years and every time he brings the FYAH!!!!!! Hands down one of the best and most energetic performers in the game.
He may never play SNWMF due to politics, but if you get a chance to see him play you absolutely should. You will not be disappointed.

Yeah on my bucket list for sure! Sounds like I just may have to catch him in JA but I don't really ever plan to visit. Although the Welcome to Jamrock cruise sounds amazing. I need to visit the VI and Europe and Asia before JA.

the back story here is that rossta once posted about attending a ziggy concert.
the sentiment from those responding was something similar to 'gag me with a spoon'

rossta referenced that conversation in this thread.
i reminded him that many here have been attending shows from time.
so the bar is set a bit higher... make sense?

"i reminded him that many here have been attending shows from time.

Wait what are you talking about? You reminded me that some have been attending shows longer and the bar is set higher? You compared the "burn fya" era to Ziggy Marley. I talked about Buju as that was my dancehalls show I enjoyed and I would love to see Sizzla "burn fya" but honestly had I never seen Ziggy Marley he would be on my bucket list of things to do waaaaaay before Sizzla.

I don't understand how you can say that the kind of music I enjoy is not good music because in your mind I was young and not around for the "burn fya" era and don't know good music.

I love every one of Ziggy Marley albums and Wild and Free is my favorite.

Give Thanks BV for the historical phorum context.
I love the fya bun era, style and music, but I love Ziggy sameway. Ziggy has handled his position with excellence and honor, IMO. Hard to compare the styles though, regardless of ones experience with the Word Power and Sound*

Re: Favorites of 2015?

Hey Rossta, I picked up the 'Ride Tru' album at the Akae Beka show in Fairfax. I agree it is excellent! Seems like Tippy & Vaughn hit a high point with that one, which is fitting because I believe it was the last album released under the "Midnite" name. But my favorite song is most definitely 'Arise Again', followed by 'Credited' and 'Restore'. It's really good start to finish though, and I love the overall vibe of the album...

Also, I think you may be misinterpreting BV's comments. He's basically saying late-90's, early 2000's was a high point for live reggae, and I kinda agree (although I also like early 90's Burning Spear/Isreal Vibration/Culture/Alpha Blondy vibes).

Sorry you didn't like the Capleton show. I'm thinking you caught him on an off night, because in his prime he was probably the best live reggae act out there. Sizzla is good, but Capleton's energy on stage cannot be matched!

Bless!

Just got the new Anthony B album. Definitely some heavy tunes in there! Well satisfied with that one.

Also, loving the Forever Judah compilation by J.O.E.

Probably would throw that one in my top ten for freshness.

I'd rate 97, 98 over the 2000's personally, maybe I'm slight older than you?
Honestly, for me Sizzla always brings pure fire, it's been awhile, still 97-2006, cant say I have ever seen a poorly done show....

Since I didnt see a whole heap of Shows, nor did I listen to a whole heap of new music (Gotta mention Jah9, Kabaka, and Proteje still),
I will just drop a few clips from my favorite outta the few shows I attended in 2015:

Bob Marley Bday @ the Mateel:

Mother's Day @ the Mateel:

Third World @ Dub Club:

....and as someone said, as much as I rate Sizzla, Capelton and the rest late 90's- early 2000's
Alpha Blondy, Lucky Dube, Steel Pulse, and Third World brought it just as tuff in the same era, in my opinion

i agree... 97,98,99 all RUFF years..

i am going to scan some mix tape covers from that time..

i used to collect all types of mixes from various shops across the country.

work day started as such..

1. get into work
2. eat my breakfast tacos
3. wait for caffinated drink to hit
4. put in tape of choice
5. put on head phones
6. cruise throughout the day on just 1000% fiya tunes

these days the work day starts pretty much same.. only difference is i work from home.. and i start the day with a fruit and avocado smoothie.

bless up the works and give thanks for your safe arrival back home!!

one-ness

Re: Favorites of 2015?

rossta8..

if you are on any non-herbal meds, i suggest replacing those with two-three avocado smoothies per day.
Re: Favorites of 2015?
December 24, 2015 06:23PM
Non herbal meds? I wont even put advil in my body and I start my day always with a smoothie and my diet is legit and very good, I am in great shape and still run 2 miles every morning before work in under 12 minutes and have joined a cross fit gym and am in the best shape since my college soccer career.

Nothing but herbal meds go into my body. How about you BV what non herbal meds are you replacing with your smoothies?
Re: Favorites of 2015?
December 24, 2015 06:37PM
Good on you T.

I am replacing ice cream, candy, and fast food. I looked up one day and noticed a belly where abs used to be
6 months ago.

I used to be able to eat whatever as my physicality kept the weight off. Basically burning the same if not more cals per day. Also noticed a slight bit of lethargy

Been on mainly on raw smoothies for the last 3 weeks. Belly flat again and starting to drop the fat accumulated over the last year. Also changed up my morning cardio from low intensity steady state to hit intensity interval training

Big up

Same thing happened to me BV, I lost it this year and gained some weight and about two months ago I started this routine!

Proud of you BV, it is hard to workout and eat healthy, much easier to slack off. Keep it up BV!
