Sly & Robbie + Brinsley Forde = One Fine Dub - new release
December 02, 2016 10:18PM
The digital edition of "One Fine Dub" came out yesterday on all digital platforms and on the TABOU1 Bandcamp store (for those interested in higher quality audio files)

The album is the dub companion to the as of yet unreleased Brinsley Forde album I've been working on for what seems like forever. Groucho mixed the vocal album and the dub and I like the dub version a lot.

I'm waiting for Robbie and Steven Stanley to be available in Jamaica to re-do the vocal album entirely and provide a record with an atmosphere and attitude that are HARD, HEAVY and devoid of frills...

On the Bandcamp store, two versions of the album are available:

1. the track by track edition, with each song available as a separate file

2. the Side A-Side B edition, with just two files, one for Side A and one for Side B so customers can listen to the album in the same sequense, with the same transitions (and not the compulsory 2 second gap) as the upcoming vinyl

PS = special big up to Russian pirate site redmp3 for their speed in pirating and then in removing pirated content... EXACTLY 3 minutes after I uploaded the tracks on Bandcamp, they were pirated and available on redmp3. I filled out the dmca form and the content got blocked immediately. Insane

Brinsley Forde is one artist I would LOVE to see perform at SNWMF. Haven't seen him since he left Aswad in the '80s and he was the 'highlight' of that band IMO....

The riddims sound nice and I'm looking forward to the release of the vocal album next year.

I'm curious Guillaume - did 'Chaka B' also play guitar on this or were his contributions limited to vocals (of which there are very few on this Dub version)? I can't recall a dub album ever preceding the release of the vocal album before...

Yeah he has some nice things on Necessary Mayhem.

Brinsley didn't play guitar on this album. Dougie Bryan did them all and Bunny McKenzie added some on one song (Creation Rebel)

The reason I'm putting out the dub before the vocal is that I'm unhappy with the mixes of the vocal album. I've asked Steven Stanley to take care of that but Robbie Shakespeare needs to be with Steven and he has been away for a while. Hopefully in the first quarter of next year, we'll have something that at last is HARD, HEAVY and where Brinsley sounds like Brinsley Forde.

I don't thnk of Brnsley as having a voice for " hard and heavy" but maybe I'm wrong?

I see what you mean. Robbie and I want the riddims to be more representative of the typical Sly & Robbie sound: a bit harder, sparser than the dubs, with heavier drum and bass, more emphasis on the rythmic aspects (the riddim guitar, the skank piano, the percussion) and less synths.

Yet, of course, we want to have some musicality especially on a track that is not dubbed in the One Fine Dub and Creation Rebel, for which Groucho's mix could eventually be used. It's a balancing act that I dont think was tackled well enough except two songs.

So Robbie is supposed to re-do the entire vocal mix with Steven Stanley. I really like the way they did the upcoming Junior Natural album: HUGE! And that's the sound I want for Brinsley's album.

Usually, I prefer to use the same engineer for a whole album to reinforce the "album feel". Same atmosphere, so even though Groucho's mixes of 2 tracks are good, I might not use them.

Give thanx Guillaume for producing killah roots & supporting Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) ... a key NGO helping many who are suffering in the conflict zones. The volunteer doctors, nurses, techies & admin of MSF are not mamby-pambies ... they are walking the talk and o ften putting themselves in harms way.

Big Youth's "Reggae Gi Dem Dub" album preceded his "Progress" album back in 1979
