i have to say these cuts to slaving are some killer stuff.

same with the cuts on promised land/love fire (i believe the aswad original was called).

and the ones on fade away arent bad either.

i would heartically recommend anything on the label and have put in a word or two for the bdf and some vocalists to show up at this years show. we shall see.

little roy and ghetto priest from the on-u sound stable wouldnt be a bad choice either.

Little Roy is actually from the Tafari/Lloyd Daley stable, William.

My two favourites of the Slaving set are the Michael Rose and Lone Ranger ones, which I both really like a lot. Personally I find most of the other vocal-efforts quite uninteresting though. The riddim is an excellent relick imo, well produced and quite close to the 70s roots sound (not that that's necessary for me, but might be interesting to know for those stuck in them days ;-)). Big up Heartical. More please.

Nice relick, no relic...classic riddim come back again!
...some nice vocal versions, but my favorite is still I Roy's "Blackman Time"...
boring ol' fart Uncle Herbie seh so!

I think my alltime favourite tune on the riddim (from the ones I know) is Sylford Walker - Chant Down Babylon, but that I-Roy is a great tune indeed as well.

I like I Roy's 'Lloydie Coxsone Time' on 'Slaving', a Roy Cousins production.

yes and he has released albums through on-u sounds as well, but i guess you know that.

my favorite on this slaving riddim (new relick) is probably the fairly straightforward remake by roberto sanchez "slaving for a reason", then the mikael rose cut and the u brown version. the lone ranger one did little for me im afraid, too repetitive and uninspired sounding.

Interesting, that was my feeling with the U-Brown cut. At least we can agree on the Rose effort being very good. ;-)

well this a this a roots man skank
this one a roots man skank
this one a roots man skank
this a de roots man skank
a dub a dub a higher rank
this one a the roots man skank
i tell ya...

i fail to see the repetition in that!

(actually i may have made up a significant portion of the "quote" above)

:-)

while the lyrics themself are repetitive i just like the way he rides the riddim more than the ranger cut.

I've actually heard none of these and was merely responding to a press release sent to me by Heartical. I would be very interested to hear the Little Roy and Edi Fitzroy tunes as I like both artists a lot: in fact, I've got virtually every 7" Little Roy has put out, including a couple of new ones in the past year like 'Stepping In Royalty'. On Bill's recommendation I'd be keen to hear the Fitzroy flip by a name new to me Roberto Sanchez - unless it it the singer known simply as Sanchez. I rarely listen to DJs nowadays and only occasionally play records by Al Campbell and Mr Rose.

Is BDF the Basque Dub Foundation, does anyone here know?

Yes they are, Penny.

penny, i am very curious to know if the little roy "stepping in royalty" is different from the one i have on the twinkle label. i ask only because the twinkle release is a few years old, at least, and i'd find it strange if he had another release by the same title. but if he does--i'm interested as well. and thanks for the info on these releases; based on what i'm reading, i'd better get current!

Modern roots from Little Roy can be found here
longtime (on u sound 1995)
more from a little (lion 1999)
Two great cd's especially the earlier one
Little Roy's new album will be released later this month
Don't miss Little Roy out. One of my personal favorities
On the other hand, Basque Dub Foundation (from Spain) has two great dub cds
bdf meets loud & lone (brixton 2002)
sustraidun roots dub (massive sound 1997)
