1/21 : Kids of Katrina Benefit for Displaced/Orphaned Children: Clinton Fearon & the Boogie Brown Band, I'Chelle & the Circle of Light
On Saturday, January 21, reggae star Clinton Fearon and the Boogie Brown Band headline an AMURT Benefit for Kids of Katrina at the WOW Hall with special guests I’chelle and the Circle of Light.

Coming from a rich musical history, Clinton Fearon and his roots reggae group, the Boogie Brown Band, offer original lyrics and rock steady, hard-driving, stainless rhythms that appeal to people of all ages and walks of life.

The band is led by Clinton Fearon who hails from St. Catherine, Jamaica. If you know reggae music, you know Clinton “Basie” Fearon. For over 18 years Fearon was a singer, lyricist and bass player for the internationally renowned group The Gladiators, as well as a house musician for Coxsonne Dodd’s Studio One and Lee “Scratch” Perry’s Black Ark Studio. He also composed some everlasting basslines for Yabby You, Jimmy Riley, Max Romeo, Junior Byles and many others. Upon coming to the United States, he was cofounder of the popular reggae group The Defenders.

In 1993, Fearon formed his own group, the Boogie Brown Band. Their debut album entitled Disturb the Devil received critical acclaim around the globe. Their second CD, 1997’s Mystic Whisper, was voted Number One Release by Reggae Vibes/CRM Radio and selected #2 Independent U.S. Release by the Reggae Report.

What A System, released in 1999 on Fearon’s own label, Kool Yu Foot, is a two CD set with a dub side of the vocal tracks that was mixed by the renowned engineer Scientist. A compilation of the previous three album, Soon Come, was released by Fearon in 2002. Give and Take, the current release by the Boogie Brown Band, came out in 2004. Most recently, Fearon has released Mi an' Mi Guitar, a collection of ten solo acoustic tracks of Clinton Fearon's love story to humanity and nature.

The Boogie Brown Band consists of Clinton Fearon, lead vocals, guitar and percussion; Barbara Kennedy, harmony vocals and keyboards; Ire', harmony vocals; Jeff DeMelle, bass; Sergio Cuevas, drums; Bill Jones, trumpet; and Izaak Mills, tenor sax. Together they create danceable rhythms, positive vibes and bring the spiritual message of roots reggae music for all to enjoy.

Founded in India in 1965, AMURT (Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team) is one of the few private voluntary organizations of Third World origin. Its original objective was to help meet the needs of victims of disasters that regularly hit the Indian subcontinent. Over the years AMURT has established teams in eighty countries to create a network that can meet development and disaster needs almost anywhere in the world.

Hurricane Katrina left over 800,000 children either orphaned or displaced. Proceeds from this benefit are designated to aid the Kids of Katrina.

Tickets are $15 in advance, $17 at the door, and are available at Star Gate and WOW Hall. Doors open at 9:00 pm and showtime is 9:30. SHOWTIME: 9:30 PM, PRICE: $15 advance, $17 door.
