Matisyahu

Is anyone familiar with Matisyahu? He seems to be getting a lot of attention for his stuff, but all the songs I've heard from him are no good. Is this guy just getting publicity because he's a white, Jewish, Reggae artist or are the actually people out there who like his stuff? The reason I ask is because he's one of the artists performing at the ragga-muffins festival in SF and I'm not really in the mood to spend 50 bucks to hear some crap...lets hope this guy isn't at Sierra Nevada this summer

Peace

Ha!
I'm a white Jewish reggae musician & I ain't got $#!+ in terms of publicity...
(...damn, where's that sinister Jewish cabal that owns all the world's media when you need 'em?)
He's def. got some publicity push behind him; not the greatest band in the world behind him, but they do the job & he can spit some lyrics...but he's by no means the only one in this Hasidic stylee:

"are the actually people out there who like his stuff?"

the one time i saw him the average age was in the teens and white/jewish.
there is some novelty to him but the jam band scene has really taken him in too.

The band is Very talented and can JAM! The music appeals to all types of people.

I think he's skunkride in disguise. His payas are fake and his tzisis worn in ites, gold and green. Ask Stamina what it all means.

There is no Jewish cabal. Like all other races, the majority of Jews are working class and poor.

> where is "the Love" in all this?...

I can love da breedren, but I dun haffi love his performances, which imho lack the skill shown on his one studio cd (which in and of itself, imho, is mediocre at best)...

since I first started to watch reggae music, it was the groups that came and blew away their recordings when dem played live, who I loved the most... I havnt changed in dat respect... Matisyahu duznt come like dat fi dis observer...

no hate comin from I...

This is all very interesting. I heard his live album first and really liked several of the tracks. Then I heard his first studio release and was unimpressed. Was hoping to see him live out here on the east coast on Feb. 15, but the shows been sold out for at least a week. Hmmmm......

>this is sort of a joke to the reggae scene . i keep hearing dis guy being plugged at every semi-reggae source out there now. his name is on festivals now with artists line-ups who have been producing great releases for over 30 years (sometimes higher on line-up!)...
>his hit live cd sounds like a jam band nothing remotley close to reggae with a pop punk beat to it...
>he is now playing theatre's by himself reserved for artists who have really made impact in the music world from touring,ect...(jumping the gun a lill' r'we...
>i've had people apporch me personaly about his name because dey heard sumting about him from sum magazine dem peeped @...
>i* mean really all the power to him for doing what he wants to do. he has his rights but foul play on promotion is wicked here. gone to far already as many sit with nothing because why? 'dem dun wannah sell out!

>"is he sony's most successful reggae artist?"
not sure but heard reason why he getting the red carpet is because of sony music.
wanted to clear it up thats its just not that dis ting goes deeper than that. just ask M.Jackson...

So now we got Jesus Dread and Jewish Dread. Maybe Baptist Dread next?
I saw him on Letterman. Nice flow and he has a great guitarist. So who cares if it's not a Jamaican singing reggae. If it gets more kids interested in "real reggae' (whatever that is) I'm all for it.

Letterman jacked him..slap inna face. Sony had no power there. We shouldn't hate his stylee. It's jus spiced differently. Who gives a crap that he's a Jewish white guy. He's tryin ta do his ting and bringin good vibes with conscious lyrics. Why the upset fi dat? Good Irie beats and tings don't just come from "Dread Jamaicans", seen. We have our ROOTS and Bingy vibes and we can also have new fresh music as well. Those who hate and that are hyper-critical are just extending bad vibes into our world, not spreading the one love. Stop the ignorance and listen, maybe you'll like something, maybe you won't. Either way enjoy yourselves and promote a conscious livity. Him na sell out. He's very successfully appealed to al arge number of people, obviously proven by his record sales(#1 this year, LIVE AT STUBBS) Sony can't make people like someone. He's liked because he's doin his ting with much flava. - regardless of what the haters say. Be happy for the man and be happy that he brings attention to the Reggae Community. He certainly hasn't brought bad vibes yet. Give the Bredren a chance and just love.

Btw, I don't feel Matthew (Matisyahu) is a great by any stretch at this point. I just think we need to be more accepting and less rejecting....peace

question -

who else ( other than sinead o'connor and matisyahu recently ) is bringing new attention
and bew fans to reggae In your opinion?

i know that when misty in roots ( once and if they become "recognized" as being
top ranking
in the reggae world ) is the one GROUP that surely deserves that honor and will
put reggae back in the limelight...

MIR, respescx for your perseverance and strength in the struggle,
you r worthy of highest praise,
your time is now,

As much as I'm not overwhelmed by them, the VI artists seem to be making an impression on at least the W Coast scene and bringing in new fans, mainly from the jamband persuasion.
Unfortunately rootsee, I think MIR has too much rootsical integrity (more than say the very talented but prone to commercialist Aswad for example) to 'cross over' and hook non-reggae fans into reggae. Certainly no slap at MIR, and it's just my opinion, but one that's been informed by 30+ yrs of observation of reggae fandom.
