I always wonder what Rest In Peace really means? RIP. It seems odd to hope that someone rests in peace since their earthly life is gone. Does anyone know the history of this phrase and does it mean that there is hope no one repeats mean gossip or messes with the resting place after death? I am asking this with the sincerest of intentions...no sarcasm. Anyone want to take a stab at it? ok.. that last sentence might be a little on the dark side of humor.

Rest in peace Sis means that you fall into a sleep from which you will never awake

I thinks it has something to do with people that might have left something behind in life and RIP is said to help encourage to soul to move on and not be a disturbed spirit.

Sorry Chris, there is no soul nor spirit; just life and death. And death equals nothingness.

The abbreviation or acronym RIP has several different meanings: *It can stand for "Rest In Peace", a phrase which often appears on tombstones. The expression comes originally from the Latin, requiescat in pace, and the English version is an example of backronym formation (although the two phrases mean the same thing).*In BBSing, RIP stands for Remote imaging protocol or RIPscrip, a method of sending graphic imagery over a BBS. ...
