I would be hard pressed to come up with 10 reggae festivals that I can say from experience are good, let alone the top ten in the world.

Not sure about worldwide, but in terms of US fests, my favorites so far have been SNWMF and Dreadstock. Peace

February 09, 2006 09:17PM
yeah, Dreadstock is in the north bay area in Vallejo. It is actually put on by one of the regular posters at this board, John Dillinger, as well as Dennis Johnson and Omar Doe Selassie. Gotta big up these people for bringing a quality fest out here.

p.s. John, if you read this, could you shoot me an e-mail? got some press tent recordings that are almost ready for you and Dennis. Peace

SummerJam in Germany(I believe) always has an incredible line up. One that rivals anything the US has to offer. As for venue and vibes, I can't be sure, as I've never been. But one thing seperating US and European fests is that with the soundsystem element abroad, the roots is never missing. Also, in Germany, the police don't need a reason to search you and/or your car anytime, anywhere. I have been to a festival there, and those people were scared to DEATH! about getting caught with certain "contraband". Hardest time I have ever had in my life finding lamb'sbread. And at a reggae festival!

I'm from France and I can say that the reggae sun ska is a nice festival, but nothing to compare with Rototom, Sumfest, Rebel salute !!!!!!!
This is a very local festival, not a world famous one.
The biggest reggae festival here in France is the JaSound, 3 days, a lot of roooots artists (Yabby You just to name one !)
Re: in your opinion, wha are the top 10 reggae festivals worldwide?

Rototom~ I've never been but every year I talk to some how have. It is eight days of solid top ranking reggae bands located in the foothills of the Dolomite Mountains (the shape of Gothic cathedrals) in Italy.

here is their website:

In my opinion, my favorite shows are always in Jamaica. Rebel Salute and Western Conciousness being top ranked. Coco T's Jam Jam and Morgan Heritage's Eastfest are all excellent. Coco T's show is soundsytem style but everyone raves about it. I totally enjoyed SNWMF as my fav USA show, so far.

Here are some other European shows: You can link to their websites from the Rototom board.

FESTIVAL

SUMMERJAM - Germania
CHIEMSEE REGGAE SUMMER - Germania
SUNDANCE - Olanda
SEASPLASH - Croatia
SPRING VIBRATION e WIESEN SUNSPLASH - Austria

CASTELLO REGGAE - Abruzzo
Babylon by Bus - Calabria
Ja'SOUND - Francia
POSITIVE VIBRATION - Colfelice (FR)
BORNASCO REGGAE - Bornasco (Biella)

Ras James (or Dillinger), I have heard that Dreadstock uses a lotta convicts from a nearby prison to do labor on the site weh this fest is held. Is dis truth? If it is I commend those who come up with da idea as well as those who continue to implement such program that help dem bredrin, sistren who're locked down keep a sense of belongin to the comunity...

as for best reggae fests worldwide... well I have only been to a few, but from perusing the pages of dat magnificent mag Reggae Festival Guide, I see a bunch that would fit dat bill. each one usually has a website associated wid it and from dat, ya can check out how Ones an Ones feel about an event, thereby gettin a feel for said event...

I do know that (thru reasoning wid a sistren in Germany) dat deh HUGE successful fests in Europe that I am aching to visit one day... such as dem listed by Sis Irie up above... seemingly onna much largere scale than anything we have here, in both production AND attendance...

an then of course deh ar all dem in JA dat ar at the source, gotta go deh!

So what's the "new addition"????
I suppose most were not in attendance, but I will also cast a vote for Winter Reggae in Paradise (WRIP). (at least for a top ten slot)

True, WRIP is an infant, but that's sometimes where the diamonds shine. Hope some more irie eyes mek it over next Jan!

Hey Ras Danny, I saw somewhere here on the board that there were too many thugs at Dreadstock. I wasn't there, but I was hoping you could give an honest reply. I went to Montery a few years ago when Steel Pulse and Prezident Brown played and I thought it was too rough. Someone got busted for carrying a gun, and I saw two fights break out. There was definitely more of a fair atmosphere than a reggae one. I haven't been back since.

for those thinking Dreadstock is near top 10, those who had a good time and enjoyed our Vallejo show, thanks much for the compliments, i will let folks know from the multiple camps that helped put it together in 2004 and 2005...

ironic in a good way the show started from my accidental kicking it at the 2003 SNWMF on the small stage and stumbling onto the band called Midnite. much has happened since then, it all ends up being good as my personal walk is the means to a righteous end.

james, or anyone for this matter, i can be reached at john_svc@hotmail.com give me a shout, looking forward,

we do invite some folks out on parole and recovering poly-substance abuse program to come and help the show if they can. vallejo is a place where the irie vibe is most needed, why we keep doing it there despite it being a tuff walk.

man! i didnt know there were so many festivals all over the world, this is cool, i beleive each festival brings us more folks to enjoy this music and builds the vibe, already there are people who make it a summer migration - lifestyle to hit all the shows, maybe youngsters one day will be at these shows like a summer camp series of sorts.

one of many things all shows have in common is no violence or bad mean feelings. even the current state of affairs in this country cant say nothing to this, we peaceful and true to this. looking forward to this next SNWMF, i think we all have more friends in a de area, seen?!!! smiling smiley.........

love up, john dillinger

Does anybody remember the festival in either Monterey or Santa Cruz around 1978-1979 that featured Peter Tosh, The Mighty Diamonds and a bunch of punk bands??? There might have been one more reggae act, but those are the only ones i recall at this point. I was there with a friend and neither of recall if it was in Monterey or Santa Cruz, only that we definately stayed in SC.....

Are you a player of ________ (instrument?). I just noticed your domain looks like it's owned by Binghi Ghost - haha.

Been to: SNWMF, ROTR, and MBRF several times, and RORX (red rocks) once.

Ones I would love to so to: Rototom, Rebel Salute, Dreadstock, one in Maui, and the Northwest thing they started last year.

I'm not starting any, as you put it, 'ostensible wrath star'. I'm just pointing out that you said, translated in plain Queens English, you and your friends had the privilege to play those festivals while for 1, you were NOT at rotr 2000 and 2, you're NOT a musician in the Ark Band as I was told by the band members. To me and most other people who overstand Jamaican patois, 'I & I' means 'My brethren and I', Not Ark Band nor when a person is referring to themselves.

SNWMF - CA
Ragga Muffins Fest / BMD - CA
ROTR - CA
Monterey Bay Fest - CA
Caribbean Reggae Fest - FL
Carifest - NY
East Fest - JA

nice list Russell!!! always good seeing your name on his board.
give us a call sometime in Madison!
we are gonna be streaming Live starting this weekend so check it out you all!

wort-fm.org

our show is Tropical Riddims from 12pm- 2pm CST on Saturdays. however we do have to abide by some strict rules concerning
the amount of tunes played by one artist so we may at times take the liberty of shutting of the webcast and just broadcast locally.
Lee Perry is going to be having a b-day soon so that is a good example.

This thread is a total fantasy of where my bones want to be, thanks for the sharing. Cali festivals for me with a deep groove on the SNWMF, no stick to ROTR, great Monterrey Bay last summer, looking forward to Dreadstock. East coast in 70's and 80's was all club action. Don't remember any reggae camping festivals in northeast from dem days.

want to give thanks to all the folkswho enjoyed themselves at Dreadstock and bless up the the show as a top 10 in their heart.

if the story aint know, the vibe came from SNWMF 2003, this is valuable to know, these shows spark initiative and inspiration, a ton of other good things as well, that summer became a call to action.

i had no money, no real plan, no folks except Ras Omar and Dennis, i just knew it had to go down and that there was an urgency and righteous tension to seeing it happen in 2004, clock ticking and 14 months to go, this was in june of 2003

SNWMF, know the power and impact the purpose of the show has on people's spirit, you went on and forwarded the scene helping us to bring this music where it is most needed, employing folks, showing people an alternative.

i will put this on the script as i know y'all read this and have had folks coming to our camp from the moment y'all knew i was going to seriously do this and was not playing, the business of this will only get better as we nurture and cultivate the marketplace - there will never be too much sunshine... y'all dig?

we in this for real, for life, for the long run, this next show - 2006 is going to move it up again for the people, so necessary in these days and times. anyone who reads this, whenever you see mystic lion, evan, bobby slayton, irie dan and folks from santa cruz, the local bands like native elements, dubwize, groundation, dub fx etc, tony moses and doug wendt, malika - the lone true woman who donated her van to us to help promote a show that was finessing the line of true lovers and player haters

see these folks and many others like ras james and jah bill and michael marshall of timex social club who might not be reggae but is indeed certainly DREAD, let them know - ONE -

all about WE, less about ME, the invitation continues to stand

John Dillinger for life

My personal favorite is Monterey Bay Reggaefest. Does anybody know if this is happening this year?

kyndgrl, I have been to Reggae on the Rocks several times and thoroughly enjoyed myself. It was a gorgeous setting and the performances were top ranking. My husband and I camped out at a state park named something like Golden Bear not far from there. He had only been in the US from Ja a few months the first time we went and he couldn't sleep because the thought there would be bears all over the park. That was his first trip to Colorado, too.
