listening now to a sam carty & the astronauts lp, track playing right now is "africa we want to go" one of my favs from sam. these couple lps i have from them are nice, and the stuff he did with scratch is quirky and interesting too. in fact, i think sam is the kind of artist that scratch's vision and abilities could really enhance/complement.

Ya Ras James I like the tune. It's not what I consider a smash hit, but I've rinsed it and like it for what it is. Any tune get play 100+ times to your head in one day make you mad. : )

have a great day King

Re: What are you listening to?
January 04, 2009 05:47PM
Oh it's dirty alright. And it's autotuned to the max. But it's also hilarious and if you like (or at least don't mind) slackness, it's fantastic. "Spin me like a satellite dish." Phahahahaha! That visual gets me everytime. I never much cared for Spice or Lady Saw, because their lyrics are just too rude but damn, this is a great collaboration. Vybz & Spice compliment each other well and I think the chune is best because they play off each other well and harmonize each other.

"Spice or Lady Saw"

Spice is nothing compared to Madam Saw. Empress, have you ever seen Saw live? In the 90's her stage show was red hot, and always loved the way she spun sexuality on its end with ease and whit. In a genre where woman are more often objects as apposed to empresses, Saw commanded respect. I actually have a cassette of her old hits that rolls around in my truck. Been known to run it from time to time, which is saying alot considering my low tolerance of most things slack.

Re: What are you listening to?

PJ, haven't seen Lady Saw live (as far as I can remember) and I bet that would have an influence on my rating her. Just a little too raw for me, that's all. I love some good twists and wittyness on sex (ie Tanya) but Saw just takes it too far for me. Takes the lovin out of it and instills the seedy stuff. Kinda like comparing Vegas and Reno if you follow my drift.

I caught Lady Saw a few years ago and I must say that she was completely on-point and aware of where she was. She came out with Sycamore Tree, then kicked off her shoes and proceeded to ram the place for about an hour. At one point the selecta dropped a riddim and she called fi forward the next riddim cause that one too hex rated. Even after the crowd bawled out to hear the tune she refused to do the tune.

I don't have my music in front of me but i'll give it a shot.

She have nuff classic dancehall cuts, which I'd bet you prolly already know. Ninja Bike and Sycamore Tree for instance.

2006 Welcome To My World w/ Beenie Man
2007 Me and My Crew - The Rae riddim

2008 Nastiness - Madd Dogg riddim
2008 Your Boy Friend - Bruk Up Riddim

I think her albums are more consistant and valid than what Tanya releases. But that's probably just my opinion..

I'd take Lady G over the whole of them though.

The Heavy weighted sound of old Roots Regggae, with rich musical instrumentation, toped off with inspiring soulfilled Vox, from a focused workmans approach.

notes

Phillip “Pixs” Merchant is what you would call a musician extraordinaire. Rhythm seems to flow from anything that he touches and it continues to flow from either the strings of his bass guitar or the sticks for the drums. The range of music that he has played, from Jazz to Rock, with concentrations in Reggae, has not only introduced the world to a new sound, sense of hearing, and new appreciation for music, but has also encourage feelings, freedom and expression not allowed in most venues.

I have know Phillip the musician, “Bass Man” “Pixs”, for about 20 years and the love for the instrument comes out in every song that he plays. From the days of Gospel Caribbean Style, to the Howard Jazz Band, to Midnite, to DAPP Band, the growth and love has grown in ways that not only those with a keen ear for music can hear but any music lover.

His arrangement skills, ability to write and transcribe sounds to notes, fine tune the smallest sound for the best result in the completion of the music is astounding. Not many people can offer the complete musical package of reading, writing, arranging, producing and playing at a level of excellence but “Pixs” has accomplished this with what is not only natural talent but with desire to improve and excel.

The part of Pixs that may not be seen or heard as much as it should is the vocal instrument that he also carries. The combination of Voice and Bass, takes you to another level of love and consciousness that is not common. This combination gives the term “take me away” to a whole new level. You can get caught in the magic of the moment when the music starts and the melody of the voice and other instruments begin.

How does it stack up ? For me I enjoy all of IJAHMAN songs. The "Haile I Hymn" is a great a great collecion of songs. It's all good. I'm about to listen to "I Do" with his wife Madge. So imho "Are We A Warroir" is a nice one- it stacks up to any IJAHMAN. Check it out and enjoy.

Thanks for the input AJ. Have had Haile I Hymn for quite a while (and love it) and also a couple of other releases for a minute now (Tell The Children and another one whose name escapes me right now) but some of the other stuff iNi have heard from him can be hit and miss for me sometimes. Then iNi get overwhelmed with the amount of material he has and don't really get to check it any further because iNi don't know what to buy that may be to my liking. Thanks again for sharing your opinion.
