SAVE THE ANIMALS!! PLEASE???
March 17, 2006 03:05AM
Please tell ten friends to tell ten friends that The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors and advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned and neglected animals in exchange for advertising. So here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.
CLICK THE PURPLE BUTTON ITS FREE AND FEEDS ANIMALS WITH EACH CLICK:

And please send emails to friends THANKS!!! MASSIVE!!!!

It can be difficult to sympathize with neglected animals in the face of the worldwide human suffering being furthered everyday by our political leaders. So bear in mind that some may be more focused on human issues and may move cat and dog issues to the background.

That being said - If it takes twenty seconds for me to navigate to a few pages and it results in the feeding of neglected and abandoned animals, its seems worthwhile. I did it this morning, and I'm going to forward the links to a few friends that i know have great compassion for animals. I've added the link to my favorites, and will try to keep going there.

Thanks for the heads up

could you please tell us what happens when you press that button?

being a .com site i have a feeling your email address gets harvested and sold to someone.

wouldnt the money be better spent spaying and neutering animals?

i think it would.

i would also like to see a breakdown of admin costs vs actual food bought and delivered to animals please.

WHAT ABOUT HUMANITY???
If it takes twenty seconds for me to navigate to a few pages and it results in the feeding of neglected and abandoned humans?
Then would it be worth the time to go to a website everyday to click a purple button?
Seems to I that we can do this small effort for the "subhumans" walking the earth!
Doing this in no way that I can see takes away anything from our efforts to save humanity "ourselves".
I guess you could look at this as feeding the LION!!??
An old man and his dog walking the countryside came upon a gate to the "promised land" as described to him by the gatekeeper who wanted him to sign the register and enter the golden road which the old man was ready to do untill he found out his dog could not enter with him. Well that was not going to happen he would not separate from his partner so the old man continued his walk along Eternity Road until he came across a brother who told him it was a good thing he didn't enter the gate back down the road because it was "Hell"! And he and his dog should come with him to Zion' Gate where all are welcome.
"The Dwellers of the Earth Race!!
ONE LOVE and thanks for listening, Denny

So once again please save these in your favorites or on a notepad and click the button everyday:

I bielieve you all are looking for trouble to hard, looking for the wolf in sheeps clothing. You seem not to trust this SNWMFsite with your email address as well jah bill?
What is honest? Who is trying to help and who is trying to decieve?
We must take our chances somewhere to do something.
Each time the purple button is clicked it documents that a visitor has viewed that page and all the sponsers ads on it.
Each click generates a payment from those sponsers on the page and those payments are used to feed the animals.
As far as refering a friend do it like this or in a personal email if you don't want to use the refer link on the site.
Those who don't want to help don't click the button.
But don't discourage others from helping Please.?

thanks for your (non) answers. you certainly convinced me. good luck in your cause.

ps: it would probably weigh more in your favor if you had a real email address instead of a disposable hotmail one. but whatever...

ps: when you feed animals, dont overlook the wolves, in sheeps clothing or not. they are animals too.

How interesting that one assumes if I click the 'food' button that I don't spend money towards spaying and neutering. It seems to me that the logic would be the other way around. Those who care about food, often care about lowering the quantity of hungry mouths. They do go hand in hand. I suspect you might be surprised at how much I do donate yearly to animal rescue. Not to mention recently being a foster home for a terminally ill animal that needed the most undesirable kind of care. Please ya'll, think before you speak. Way too much smart ass conjecture in this thread.

BTW all living things are part of creation. The care and nurturing of life is a reflection of true humanity.

animals deserve good treatment, yes, but do they deserve to be saved? who should i save first? the human child toiling illegally in africa's diamond mines thru slave labor or the rabbit they grew in a cage so they could test shampoo on it's eye balls?
Re: SAVE THE ANIMALS!! PLEASE???
March 18, 2006 12:42AM
You know what, Pale Ryder, if you had seen that cat when it first arrived at my house, it mirrored a homeless person who had lived out in the rain and mud for years on end. It was caked in poop. The cat had lymphoma and feline aids and needed bathing every day. A little bit of love changed this cat into something mystical. It was so magical that my Jamaican husband who generally does not have the same feelings towards animals said he was convinced the cat represented a higher spirit. Who are we to say how our love for life is tested and what the manifestation will be.

Re: SAVE THE ANIMALS!! PLEASE???

BG, why would one be at the expense of another? That is very narrow thinking in my opinion. Not just myself but many animal lovers gave days of their time to Hurricane Katrina victims evacuated to Austin Texas. It is about the love of life..not the life of humans versus the life of animals. Life is life. To love one is to love the other.

there are also several associated sites that go on the same principle. The hunger site, the child health site, the rainforest site, the literacy site, and a site that helps provide mammograms( I'm not sure if this is a great thing, though, based on what some alternative health practitioners say, so decide for yourself on that)

so anyway you could click and help humans or the environmnent also..
Re: SAVE THE ANIMALS!! PLEASE???
March 18, 2006 01:02AM
Ok - I dug in a little deeper and came to this: [charityusa.com] which personally makes me feel better with trusting the site.

This is not the standard for websites however, many sites use cookies and clicks to monitor your shopping habits, interests, etc. - and this data winds up on any number of "lists" which are in turn sold to marketer's. That's why all those banner ads want you to "click here" or "play this game". Any site can monitor visitors, domains, clicks, ip addresses and the like without you clicking anything, simply by going there. Clicking something indicates running a script, and not all are friendly...

one more thing:

>Please ya'll, think before you speak. Way too much smart ass conjecture in this
>thread.

smart ass conjecture eh? do you even fathom what im talking about here? im talking about you being taken for a ride by some commercial website whose only real purpose is to get the email address of bleeding heart do-gooders so they can sell them to "advertisers" who will spam them with ads for viagra and who knows what else. if you want to feed animals then thats fine. what i think we got here, hiding behind a hotmail account, is a somewhat obvious scam. i suggest you take your money down to the safeway and buy some cat food and feed it to feral animals. now THAT might do some good.

but hey go ahead and press the purple button all you want, its just hard to imagine that it will actually do anything that you want done. there is some chance this is a legit thing but much more likely in my mind this is a scam that has taken in greeney here and now is taking in you. no problem though, have at it. maybe you should email greeney and ask for some particulars like i did (and he failed to provide) before you start whole heartedly taking up his cause and calling people smart asses.

maybe my problem is that i think too much, eh?

I've been clicking on this for some time and haven't gotten spammed from it. It looks like it does set a cookie-cause you're only supposed the click once a day.. But i have counterspy, adaware etc and I don't think it's been giving me any crap.
but as always it's best to check stuff out yourself.
Re: SAVE THE ANIMALS!! PLEASE???
March 18, 2006 01:20AM
Could be, JB, there is definitely danger in supreme over analyzing or thinking your thought process is more advanced than the next. I work for the American Cancer Society and I know for a fact that money is donated for mammograms and other charitable needs from these sites. They have been around for years. And, yes, they probably do track my isp in addition to giving away what they promise. I am not overly afraid of having my email tracked since I have a very good spam filter on my accounts. Even if I were the recipient of unwanted mail, etc, if the clicks benefited the intended recipients, I would still do it. Would I not make that effort to help the child in the diamond mine because my email would be tracked? Pleeez.

I also have to laugh at your reference about buying cat food and giving it away. I do that very thing on a regular basis. Many people help the underserved on a daily basis and believe it or not, most of us are not nitwits who can't think through the possible scams. Most of us are smart enough to check into the benefit of the charities we give to. So thank you for your critical analysis but it is not necessary. I can actually think for myself with logic and reason.

Imagine that.

you all should be careful about feeding feral cats - they outcompete native predators for their prey - and they prey on native species. They've done a lot of damage to ecosystems.

If you want to take them into your home, feed them, give them vaccinations, etc, thats another thing.

I live in a pretty sparsely developed area next to a river with a large natural park. I seen someone regularly feeding a cat, and everyone thought it was a nice thing. Now the cat has had kittens and there's six cats there. This person no longer feeds the cats, so they're getting their food some other way...

either that - or they'll grow up sick and malnourished.

"have fun saving the world, you two..."

I am sorry to see just another example of sarcasm and lack of respect for those who don't see eye to eye with you, Jah Bill. After all your name does have JAH as a prefix. Anyone who puts out energy to uplift those in need are carelessly deemed as "having fun, out saving the world." That smacks of total disrespect for deeds done with a clean heart and a desire to improve the life given by... JAH the Creator. Where does anyone say anything about saving the 'world' except you? I am grateful my life is not just going out to listen to music. I believe it is equally important to take time and commitment to practice the message in the music.

You might get more insight about bleeding liberal hearts such as mine by checking the charity on my website for the Jamaica National Children's Home (Tegwyn Special Unit) for mentally and physically disabled children in Jamaica. Mikey General and I work together on that cause. He finds the time out of his busy music schedule to 'have fun saving the world' by lending a hand at the home. If you find yourself actually wanting to give to 'man'kind, or to even be 'kind', you might find a way to help those kids. Unless of course you assume any charity in Jamaica is also a scam. If I had assumed that based on my many experiences in Jamaica, these kids would not have a freezer, refrigerator, washing machine, new kitchen counter, lawnmower and three years worth of underwear. Fortunately, my previous experiences did not take away my urge to try. Those items for the home were the results of others who believed in the cause 'sight unseen' and gave because their heart told them it was the right thing to do.

Maybe a day at the euthanizing clinic for unwanted animals might give you an urge to help the helpless.

I just think, as I sed b4, care for domesticated animals teks away from all that we SHOULD/CAN do for our fellow humans in need... if other humans were NOT using energy/resources (of which 'merikans seem to have, immeasurable) to care for (imho, unneccessarily) domesticated animals, and instead feeding PEOPLE then mebbe we could have a world without hungry HUMANS...

(I know I gwan ketch flak frum animal lovers, but thats my opinion [as a former animal owner, even] and I'm stickin to it)

It is curious that caring for non-human life is viewed as a hippie thing or a do-gooder cause. There are many non-monotheistic religions/philosophies that believe in the inter-connectedness of all life, including non-human life. Where do you think the hippies and do-gooders learned it from? From cultures that are thousands of years old....

Re: SAVE THE ANIMALS!! PLEASE???
March 18, 2006 08:06PM
Danny, I can understand your point of view. If we stop raising cows and raised more grain we might make a much better impact on feeding the poor, not to mention reducing the risk of many forms of cancer. My efforts usually are activated by what comes my way. Sadly, there are many issues in the world that no matter what I do, the resolution is outside the realm of my influence. Therefore, I have a strong understanding that I cannot save the world. That would be rather vain. But I do think when people work together, they can have a positive affect on all living things. If I come face to face with an issue and can make an effort to do something positive and loving, then I believe it came my way for a reason.

J72...you understand exactly where I am coming from. The belief that all life is interconnected.

And yes, I love and respect Jah Bill, as well. I just don't care for his stereotyping and what I perceive as unnecessary sarcasm.

As far as Rasta, many reggae songs refer to respect of the birds and animals, such as those by Culture, Bushman, Warrior King and others. You don't have to lie down with the animals to love and respect them.

Our dog, Lucia, loves my husband like white on rice. During this trip to the river, Ricky was in the tree (look closely) and Lucia, jumped in the water and swam back and forth in front of him never letting him out of her sight. She would protect him with her life.

About Rasta respect for all Jah creation...of course. But Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds" were NOT in cages. And the habit some American folks have of letting their dog run around the neighborhood & stick their nose in other dogs' $#!+ (not to mention the orifices from which they emanated) and chew & lick all manner of other stuff such as dead rats, their own genitalia, etc. , and then come home where their owner greets them: "oh where have you been poopsie? Come give mama a big kiss! Muah muah!" lol...also rolling around in the aforementioned substances, then getting on or even in their owners' beds...

you know, sister irie, ever since you joined this thread, you have been insinuating that i dont love animals because i dont jump through the hoops you apparently believe to be necessary to show that love.

let me assure you nothing could be further from the case. in fact, here is a photo of my pussycat, zach, who i have owned and loved for many years now.

as an aside, the photo demonstrates that people and their pets can become so intertwined that the pet can express the feelings of the owner, oftentimes more graphically than the owner can or is willing to because of societal constraints that animals are not shackled by.

enjoy!

Funny, I never said or insinuated Jah Bill didn't like animals. Nor did I ask him to personally jump through any hoops. What is it in my words that makes him jump to conclusions instead of hoops? All I asked of Jah Bill was to show respect for others. I seem to have hit a nerve. It appears Jah Bill is quite capable of dishing out whatever he wants but has a rather hard time taking his own medicine.

Jah Bill, you have totally lost your cool. I was editing my post before I even saw yours. If you will notice, your ongoing sarcasm was posted the same minute as I edited. I posted, read what I posted, noticed the error and immediately corrected my wording at the same time you were posting. After I corrected, your post magically appeared same time. Would you like me to go back and change it to it's exact original statement. If that would make you feel better, I would be happy to. It sure is better than you getting all paranoid and making even more false accusations.

To clarify for Bill's sake I did not have the word insinuated in my first sentence originally. What I said was "I never said Bill didn't like animals." Ok, Bill? Does that clear the smoke screen?

I don't get your comments about crying? Is that some kind of sarcasm towards women? The thought of crying never occured to me, but maybe it did to you?

Jah Bill~your vanity never ceases to amaze me. Your words and actions could never come close to having sufficient power over me to cause hysteria or shrillness. Actually, unless you are not taking the photo, it appears your cat is pointing that finger at you.

From Snopes.com (the internet watchdog) concerning breast cancer, animal rescue and other 'click' sites. The following explains the validity of the actual internet site and also points out some incorrect information that has been spread by email. See what snopes has to say below:

snopes.com:

Claim: You can help disadvantaged women in America obtain free mammograms simply by clicking a button on a web site.

Status: True.

Examples:

Let this be your good deed for today ... it only takes a second. Go to the site below. All you do is click a button and a woman gets a free mammogram at no cost to you. It is paid for by corporate sponsors (who gain advertising in the process because you see their logo). All you do is go to the site and click on the free button. It takes one-second. However, you're only allowed one donation so please pass the word.

Origins:

Over the last few years we've seen many a purportedly altruistic appeal circulate on the Internet, each one claiming you could donate money to a worthy cause or right some terrible injustice — at no cost to you — merely by taking some simple action, such as forwarding an e-mail message.

At The Breast Cancer Site, you can "donate" clicks towards the provision of mammograms for underprivileged women in the U.S. And it's no scam, even if it's not exactly as described in the e-mailed exhortation to become part of this.

Unlike the way things are explained in the e-mail, one click does not magically provide a mammogram to a needy woman — it takes 45,000 clicks, not just one. Averaging 58,000 clicks a day, The Breast Cancer Site provides funding for approximately 1.3 mammograms a day. Visitors are also not prohibited from clicking more than once; they just can't do so more than once a day.

Sponsors become involved with this site (and others like it) as a form of advertising and public relations and thus are willing to pay for their messages to be viewed by consumers. They pay CharityUSA.com, the parent entity of the site, on a per-click basis; CharityUSA.com directs 75% of the total ad revenue collected to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and keeps the remaining 25% to run the site. (The Breast Cancer Site is not a non-profit entity, so it shouldn't be confused with a charity even though it does direct a significant portion of its revenues to those in need. It exists to make a profit, and that it's still around proves it's succeeding at this.)

GreaterGood.com also allows visitors to initiate donations to several other causes via The Rainforest Site, The Animal Rescue Site, and The Child Health Site.

Other sites that offer similar aid to charities are:
The Hunger Site
FreeDonation.com

__________________________

One of the reasons I became aware of the breast cancer site is solely due to where I work. Thousands of women across the country call us daily for help getting mammograms and other cancer screening. Some have worked their whole lives and recently lost their health insurance and cannot get screened. We are always greatful to organizations who help provide resources we may refer them to. Some even pay for cancer treatment if the woman is screened by one of these resources. If any of you have a wife, sister or mother diagnosed with breast cancer, and they did not have the resources to catch it early, you know where I am coming from. The stage when cancer is caught has everything to do with the long term prognosis. Therefore, early detection is essential in saving lives.

I am grateful to know there are major corporations proud to donate to these causes through advertising on these sites. It cost them little compared to the number of people who form a sense of loyalty to them for their commitment to donate to mammograms, animal rescue, katrina victims, the environment. It is good corporate advertising and promotes a sense of goodwill.

My involvement in this thread was never to intentionally needle Jah Bill.I hope we can end the thread with the seriousness in which these issues should be considered. People go to these sites with the best of intentions and some of them actually do help. It would be a real shame to let cynics deprive those who need help from something that might actually save or improve the quality of their life~

such as domesticated animals... ?

Howard Lyman (the Mad Cowboy) in a lecture at the "VegePortland" gathering this past weekend gave a figure like 40,000 cats and dogs a year are killed by LA County CA, ground up, and fed to livestock, which in turn becomes food on (some peoples) our tables... imho, continuing to further the domestication of basicly useless animals is a waste of money or "clicks" that could/SHOULD be MUCH better spent giving to causes such as breast cancer, hunger, education, drug programs... the list of HUMAN needs goes on... and on... and on....

imho, continuing to further the domestication of basicly useless animals is a waste of money or "clicks"

Yeah, and every day my father also wastes countless amounts of money and water taking care of his flower garden. He does likewise for his vegetable garden too, but I'm sure you wouldn't call a vegetable garden "useless". The fact that the flowers make the garden beautiful and brings him great joy to him and all the people who visit his house obviously is of no significance to you Ras Danny.... JOY, LOVE & HAPPINESS ARE NOT USELESS, nor are the things which bring those feelings out in us and the people around us.

I am in total agreement Danny that all life is valuable. There is so little respect for human life as well. I can hardly watch the news any more due to the incredible disregard. Since I believe all life is connected, I have an appreciation and desire to improve all life.

Daniel, I don't think your fadda "wastes" money and water doing a thing that brings him great joy & happiness... but I also think he doesn't let those things he grows go to the point that they need to be "saved" by throwing money at or 'clicking" onna website, nor do I have a problim with the countless people who responsibly TAKE CARE of the pets they own, but seeing the way this pet thing is a corporate profits driven monster which the pet industry seems to not giv a dam about, I think, imho, the whole animal domestication thing is way outta hand...

Well I agree with you 100% about the notion of breeding animals to be sold for money. I can't say I really know anything about this "Animal Rescue Site" and just how corporate it is, but the original post reminds me of a similar Petition started by MoveOn.org (whose site looks pretty corporate too), where everyone was being asked to "Click Here" to send a petition to congress demanding that they not allow drilling in ANWR. Well, i don't know how much my 'clicking' aided and abetted in having that legislation killed back then (it has just resurfaced again), but i did it anyway and was happy to do so. I'm sure Jah Bill did not participate in said campaign because: 1) like a .com site, email addresses at .org sites also get harvested; and 2) MoveOn doesn't spay or neuture animals either (though I am sure they would love to do so on GW)....

So, if tens of thousands of animals were abandoned during Katrina (through no fault of the owners, but rather because the government would not let them take their pets with them), is it not right that SOMEONE step in and rescue them? When a pet owner dies, is it not right that SOMEONE step in and try and find that animal a new home? Doing these things takes money, and I am sure glad someone is doing it or else my parents would not have a dog (Katrina dog named Bayou) right now....

I am pretty much with Sister Irie on this one~all life is valuable. Of course, I would save a human before an animal...but the fact remains that if I am in a position to help either a human or an animal, I will do what I can. There is disregard in these times for all life. There are people who trust an animal before they trust humans...I for one can't stand to see any living thing suffer. All jokes aside..I feel bad when I accidentally tear a leaf off of one of my houseplants ;0)
Re: SAVE THE ANIMALS!! PLEASE???
March 21, 2006 05:16PM
the corporate pet industry I refer to is the one that mek things to feed the animals, care of one type or another, and yes raising and selling dem to profit and keep the cycle going for future profit down the road... well, someone who cares about animals (domesticated or wild) who steps up to rescue animals abandoned or "orphaned" by whatevah means, is not a bad thing in my opinion... individuals are not who I'm upset with, heck I used to own some dogs myself at one point in mi life, Great Danes... I even get joy still when I see dem kind...

but what bothers I is all the human faces I see needing love, joy, happiness, FOOD, CLOTHING and SHELTER, and caan get it, but this monster pet industry can roll on mekkin a few get fat, seemingly not caring about the 40,000 pets destroyed yearly in LA (thats just one area, think about the numbers if you add up all the other areas in this nation where that happen) and doing it on money that could be more reasonably & morally (imho) spent on dem fellow humans who go hungry daily, RIGHT HERE INNA GOOD OL USA... I feel the greater need is to care for our own fellow humans...

Oprah Winfrey hadda great "Special Report" on this very subject (Hunger/Poverty In America Today) just yestaday, which was eye opening still, even in light of what I (we) already know...

bottom line, I don't HATE animals OR the people who own dem, I just feel that this "pet" thing is way outta hand, is driven by a "pet industry" that cares lttle about "pets" not their human counterparts... and a lotta lives are at stake... both pet and human...

yes greeney i appreciate your lightness here and you could convert me much more than some others who have joined this thread.

so mr green, thanks for the spar, its been fun and believe it or not i support this cause; my only reservation was using a website to further it, like i said all along. funny how things get all twisted around sometimes but thats what happens when one "assumes" and gets all defensive about what was initially a very simple point.

and yeah im with you: that show doesnt seem all that old. guess that says something about us.

i said i wasnt returning to this thread but curiosity just got the better of me.

ps: for those not in the know, thats not my cat and thats not my photo. a simple look at the properties would have revealed that.

Sista Irie,
Thanks for all the great, usefull info. above.
You mentioned "Katrina Donations"
Well my friend "Steve Forbert" set up a download of unreleased songs of his including a song called "Underwatertown" written and put on an album that was never released in 1981.
This song is amazing!!! Sounds like a song inspired by the hurricane but was written 25 years before.
Please "MASSIVE" d/l this I guarantee you will love it!!! and say WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWw!!!

Underwatertown
From Steve Forbert:
Greetings on this September 8th from County Down, Ireland! We're making available a four-song benefit download to help the Gulf Coast victims of Katrina. Of course, there are currently many ways to contribute, but whatever we can donate surely won't hurt. A special thanks to Sony/BMG for permission to use "Underwatertown" on this benefit download. "Underwatertown" (written in the early eighties) is the second track from my 1983 unreleased Columbia LP to see the light of day. (The first, you may recall, was "Samson & Delilah's Beauty Shop."winking smiley Also here is "Starstruck." This studio recording, produced by R. S. Field, originally appeared on the 2002 This Is Where I Belong CD tribute to Ray Davies and the Kinks. Please see our track listing below for the other two selections. This is especially important to me because I'm originally from Mississippi, but, of course, this storm has already affected all of the U.S. in a big way and, like last year's tsunami, will probably (to some degree) rattle the entire world. To all downloader friends, thanks for your support with this effort!
Sincerely, Steve

Danny. When my father brought a dog home (when I was about 5), I was filled with hapiness and joy. This elation was not in any way "driven by a pet industry". I agree that most of the "pet industry" food is probably really bad for pets, but most of the "human industry" food is pretty bad for people too.

If I was on a deserted island, and I had to choose between feeding myself and my family or feeding a "pet", the choice would be simple. But in this world, you know how the song goes... "There is enough for everyone", especially if people focus on their needs and not be so fixated on GREED. My love for you in no way detracts from the love I have for my empress. So too, my love for all the animals, vegetables and minerals in the world does not detract from my love of humanity, it only increases it!!!!!

Re: SAVE THE ANIMALS!! PLEASE???

So many consicous and good hearted people in this thread. Give thanks to everyone who participated. Alot of good discussion and reasoning came from it.

In response to the Humane Society and Hurricane Katrina, I have a little miracle story. My friend, Lisa, also known as Rasta In Babylon on some Jamaican message boards lived in New Orleans for 23 years. She is a gourmet cook and worked at one of the finest hotels in New Orleans. She was at the hotel when the emergency evacuation went into effect. Her two cats were left at her apartment and she was not allowed to go get them. Fortunately, she left a huge bag of open cat food in the apartment. She was devastated leaving them behind as she fled because these cats were like family to her. One had been with her ten years only slightly younger than her daughter.

Being displaced, she had no computer, no phone, no permanent address or any way to try to rescue her animals. All she could think of was her family pets that she abandoned starving to death. Along with that pain, she was incredibly depressed and deeply effected by the massive loss of life. She even felt guilty about caring so much about her loving cats.

Weeks went on and no one was allowed into her NEw Orleans neighborhood. Lisa continued to have dreams about her animals as she moved to Florida and got further and further away from everything. One Friday night, I went to a benefit in Austin hosted by the Humane Society. They showed an amazing film about the history of the Mardi Gras Indians. After the movie, I walked up to one of the Humane Society volunteers and mentioned my friends story. It turns out the next morning his wife was part of a volunteer rescue group going into NO to find abandoned and displaced animals. He said he couldn't promise anything but he would give his wife Lisa's address and if there was any possibility, they would try to get them.

That Sunday afternoon, I get a call from a police officer in New Orleans. The folks from the Humane Society were able to navigate into her neighborhood, had found the house and were ready to break in. The policeman wanted permission. They hacked into the house, found both cats still alive and the Humane Society drove them back to Austin where they stayed with me for two months until I could get them back to Lisa.

One might say that the time and effort of these pet rescuers could be better spent trying to save lives. However, the NO police were not letting outsiders into the area to help people but they did allow pet rescue by recognized National organizations. Secondly, the joy and relief the rescue gave to my friend and her daughter allowed them to heal much faster than if the animals had died in the house.

All things are possible. Where there is a will, there is often a way. I have as strong an admiration for the animal rescue groups as I did for the Red Cross the day evacuees were delivered to Austin. Their commitment and dedication was outstanding as was the desire of all the volunteers who came down to our convention center to lend a hand. I have to say that many of the evacuees were extremely upset about losing and leaving their pets behind. Their pets meant the world to some of them.

Community is the key. Love is a powerful driving force. When I see great things come out of small actions, I think of Selassie's statement concerning the unity and strength of positive livity including the confidence in the victory of good over evil. When people work together for good causes the world can become a better place. I hope I never become jaded to the power we each have to help the helpless.

Animals are great~humans are pretty damn decent too...at least most of them ;0)
