I spent some time with Lucky Dube's old band, the Slaves, back in '92 when they pased through Santa Cruz and Monterey. Great S.A.-inflected rhythms, full horns with a nice trobone by a man Jaboo, heavy bass by a man Mattat. I don't know if they are still intact, but I still play the cassette we dubbed up late night in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Crucial, melodic, and tight.

Anyone have any info on them?

Peace.

Jahmeek, the cuts that the Slaves laid on me were all original compositions, not L.Dubes tunes. Kind of a sweet Soweto urban rub-a-dub, with a snappin swing and nice horn arrangements. And great vocal harmonies, as befits a S.A. group. Makes you want to dance and hug somebody at the same time. Nice.

Peace

Ha - balding guy on right could well be my brother! Curtis will be there again I'm sure - but I really have to get him to SNWMF this year, think he only made it to Angel's Camp once (although Marysville several times). Boonville is a lot closer for him...
